My seats were in not that bad condition at all but decided to use a rug doctor from Morrisons, I made them a little worse and introduced water stains I probably soaked them to much.

Can I get rid of marks and water marks by hand or do I need a rug doctor? If by hand what method and products are best to use?

joshH had water stains on his seats and recently cleaned them by hand. I can't remember exactly what he used but it did the trick. Take a look in the Fabia projects section.

Personally, I invested in a vax muliti purpose carpet cleaner (search the bay for vax 6102) effortless cleaning for not a huge outlay

Wow, I've never had to do anything more than just scrub (wrong word, rub would be better) them with the car soap detergents they do.

Nothing fancy either just the spray foam stuff you get from more places. Leave it on for 30 seconds or a bit more if heavily soiled then rub off like they say, does the trick every time for me.
