vrs minor problems..

Featured Replies

hi guys/girls

I recently bought a 53 plate fabia vRS with 74k on the clock i love it to bits but as with all second hand cars it has its problems some of which are down to me others are from previous owners...

with your combined infinite wisdom could someone help with these following things?

  • firstly (by my own stupid tw** fault) i did a quite a steep hill start in 2nd gear without realizing then to add insult to injury i put more gas on thinking arghh come on move... i now have an engine bay which stinks of what i assume is clutch, the smell is still persisting now after about hour now is it likely i have caused any permanent damage? and is there anything i can do to help it?

  • secondly i seem to have an intermittent electrical fault which affects the following: a) wiper on setting one whereby it either works or doesn't and adjusting the speed setting does nothing however all other wiper settings work B) the rear wiper has a mind of its own and works even when not turned on c) the Rear Near Side tail light sometimes trips out causing the light to come on the dash even after i have replaced both tail light bulbs. I've read about blown fuses somewhere so does this sound like a cause?

  • thirdly there is also a squeaking noise coming from the drivers side somewhere when driving, a wheel baring maybe?

and finally on a separate note i need to replace the brakes as they are shocking as are the tyres could anyone recommend a decent brand? i want something grippy in wet and dry that are reasonably quiet...

thanks in advance i really appreciate your help! happy new year by the way!

First one I don't know

Second one, sounds like you just need a new stalk

Third one I'm not sure without hearing it but sounds like new discs and pads might sort it from you saying they are shocking.

thanks I think the clutch will be ok it was a one off and I intended to replace pads and disks but wanted to know what people were using... :)

is the rear wiper coming on when you put it into reverse with any normal wiper setting selected ?

  • Author

yeah actually it does come to think of it

The smell of burning clutch will go away after a few days.

haha thanks

Pagid discs and pads, the oem brand, get them from EuroCarParts, check the EuroCarParts subsection of the forum for 25% off your purchase

kumho tyres - seem to keep me on the road !!

Nice one thanks on both replies I'll look into each I didn't realise we got 25% off thats pretty sweet and I'll look into the tyres I was gonna go for some contis as a friend has them but I'll look about cheers again

yeah actually it does come to think of it

its a feature, like the recirc coming on when reversed is engaged

I don't think you need bother with the code, there is more than 25% off at the moment lol. I tried putting it on after I made a purchase and its currently ignored, I think because of the discount.

Sometimes they also do discounts greater than this, I bought when brakes were on 30% recently for instance

There is 34% off the sachs shocks for instance at the moment, apparently up to 45% off

Haven't checked the brakes section though, so I'm sure sense prevails as to whether the code is relevant or not

For a sachs clutch kit you are better going to sachs themselves they got a cracking offer on DMF + clutch kit...which is something I am thinking of at the moment...might even buy tonight as I've a terrible itch to buy

ah ok so thats the wiper issue sorted always wondered what the deal with that was on my old fabia and as for the clutch ill only replace that when it falls apart which will probably happen quite soon if I dont pay attention to which gear I'm in :(

and I didnt know we had a discount code for the forum itll be really useful when I get to the stage where ill map it ill have a look for the brake parts in a bit they're top of the list along wth some tyres

My bearing wasn't as pleasant as a squeak so I wouldn't be surprised if the squeaking is your lower ARB bush. Very common and they tend to start out as a squeak. Grab the offending corner and shake the wheel. If it's squeaking and showing signs of play to the body of the car, get both sides replaced. Parts are £20-£25 and labour is probably around 2 hours.

Rear wiper seems to be cropping up lately. Possibly related to water ingress around the wiper mech but could equally be wiper stalk...

(Ps aside from ECP 25% discount code in their signature, GSF car parts also offer one to most forums or have in the past at least. Usually only 10% but their prices can be lower to begin with)

I thought it'd be something along the lines of a bearing or bushes, they went on my last one and the noise was horrific untill I replaced them. when I get the brakes sorted ill get them to look at that too

the wipers just seem to start and stop when they like its not a problem but its irritating to say the least

its good that parts dealers acknowledge people are capableof fixing things themselves
