Which oil filter tool?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just come to give the car it's first oil change and have discovered that my existing oil filter tool will not work on this one.

It is of the type with just a ribbed cap (large ribs). What have other people used to get this off. When I was watching someone else do an oil change on a Polo they had a nice hex nut to get hold of.?

Also how do you tell whether you car is on fixed or variable service interval.?

TIA

Thanks Dave, Wow, that is one expensive tool. I need to find something a little cheaper for the use it is going to get.

I've got this type, had no problems with it and its changed thousands of filters :)

It does Steve, thank you. From the pic it does not show the ridges that must go into the flutes, so i'll need to check how many I have.

I managed to borrow a neighbough's in the end. That had a metal band that tightened on a thread, so would do normal filters as well. This appears to be the one http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_525117_langId_-1_categoryId_255216

Thanks to all for the replies.

I also discovered that I have QG1 in my service booklet which apparently means I can go longlife service intervals.

it could possibly be this one hope this helps

I wrap a strip of sandpaper around the plastic of the filter, and then a thin strip of aluminium and then finally my chain wrench (socket driven - not really enough room to get one with a built in handle in there. Might seem like a bit of faff, but it was my zero cost solution.

If you decide to go with LL servicing, you will need to ensure you reset the service interval with vagcom/vcds and not the push-button on the dash method.

Ive used one of those before it worked well... however long life servicing intervals? i may be completely an*l about oil but i change my oil and filters every 4 thousand miles irrespective of what the book says ( personnel opinion )

Well I read here 6000 miles, so went with that. My neighbour however who has a Passat said that was way to early. I must admit my old car never got oil changes on time (2.0L petrol and 147000 miles) and it seemed none the worse for wear when I sold it on.

I'd be interested in people's opinions as to their oil changes. I would expect they go from one extreme to the other.

FWIW my main driving is motorway 1 hr each way at present.

I noticed only hand tight when I put mine on, however my neiqhbour reckoned that the filter was way to tight. It had 25Nm on the cap.

I also noticed that the screws for the engine bottom cover were in a hell of a state. Has anyone found/used better versions.?

I use this type mostly for stubborn filters and one size fits all so to speak, you don't need it when you put a new filter on because you only do them hand tight.

Haha, it depends how strong you are I guess. 25nm does sound quite high tbh, that equates to a 2,5kg weight on a spanner that is a meter long.. How odd.
