iPhone/iPod holder for the dash top cubby hole

Featured Replies

Folks, I have picked up an iPod 4G to run Tom Tom and some kind of OBD app (with a wifi dongle) and want to know if a particular holder is recommended to attach to the inside of the dash top cubby hole (above the centre vents). Either something secured to the lid, that flips down, or attaches to the base of the cubby.

Any suggestions? I'd rather go for this method than a windscreen mount.

I have just installed my Garmin in that location and it wedges there against the rubber mat and lid quite happliy; Halford fed a usb power supply intoo that area and that also helps keep the unit steady

A gel type holder could also help

or cut to fit

I just took the rubber mat out and stuck the dash mount sticky disc you get with most window mounts on the clostest edge and it works great in there!

I looked but couldn't find anything that hinged up/down so just went for the sticky disc on the bottom of the cubby with the rubber mat removed for my Garmin.

I open the cubby and wedge it in

Or put it in the phone holder

Try brodit pro clips they design specific mounts for cars. Quite expensive though but they do work I've had one in every car. They even make one for mounting iPads now which makes an awesome sat Nav or screen to watch a film etc etc

Another vote for Brodit. Had one in the Volvo, have one in the Octavia. Works perfectly.

And here's the end result:

The cable looks like it "disappears" but it's just tucked into the wedge between the center stack and bottom half of the dashboard. Then I tucked it inbetween the plastic and the carpeting next to the gear shifter on its way to the lighter jack. Works fine.

Does get in the way a bit though, lol

I think the Ipad mount is mounted from the passanger seat rails with a bendy arm up.

I have tweaked the dash cubby to act as a holder for free, and looks much neater. Easy enough to do, just remove the cubby holder and put a screw on the underside next to the opening mechanism. This basically limits the opening to what ever you want, just put your device in (mine is an iphone 5) and mark it. Done

I've got a sticky disc now to stick inside the dash top box and attach the sat nav mount to.

I did buy an Oso Mount, stuck it to the inside of the lid but that (with the combined weight of the iPhone) pulled the box closed. I think the iPhone on its own may do that anyway, so best mounted on the base of the box. Just need to cut the hole and run the cables now.

This is definitely the job 3D printers were invented to solve :-)

In my case, I just rest an ipad in the cubby hole and use a small suckered hook on the windsceen to hold it back.

For a phone mount, I made a small "ball joint" from sugru and used it to hold the mount half of a cheap phone holder. That's mounted direct to the dash just below the hazard switch. works brilliantly - strongly recommended having a look a sugru for making small parts and filling small gaps :-)

Don't know if you still come on the forums dude - but if you do see this - how did you get that iphone power supply in the cubby?

And how do you take the cubby out?

Looks a great system. Ta.

In the absence of a reply about the cubby, I pulled it out myself which was dead easy to do - just prise it out around the bottom corners near the vent wheels - the whole thing comes out easily (there is a wire for the hazard lights to be aware of). Once out I simply stuck a cube of compressed from to one of the hinges to restrict the opening to the size of my phone. Dead easy. Next job I'm going wire in a female lighter socket behind the stereo somewhere and drill a small hole in the cubby to run a charging lead in for the phone.

The lighter connector I ordered has 2 wires, red - which I assume goes to a switched live, and black, which goes to erm..... What? Is it an earth maybe? Where to attach it? Answers on a postcard please.

Earth. There are some decent grounding places if you take the glovebox out
