2003 VRS MAF Issue

Featured Replies

Seem to be having an issue with my MAF. When I purchased the car the EML was on for a suspected Lambda sensor, however upon reading the codes I discovered that the actual fault lied with the MAF. The car had an occasional little jerk and hesitancy which I noticed, and sometimes an odd 'wander' on idle, so with that and the codes I unplugged the MAF and all the problems disappeared.

Anyway I got a new MAF today and fitted it, all this seems to do it make the car idle oddly again, and makes it a lot slower! I know I can get some miles an hour down a certain stretch of road, however with the new MAF plugged in, it was a struggle to get lower than what I can normally get. I thought I'd unplug the MAF again and check it, and of course unplugged its back to how it should be.

Any ideas what this could be? I should point out I turned the EML off and it's stayed off since I fitted the new one, so hopefully this unit should've cured the issue. I've known from other models that they can sometimes take time to adjust correctly, is this the same on these engines?

Many thanks :).

Another thing I'd like to point it, since owning this car, it's swallowing fuel for fun, granted I've got a slightly heavy right foot, however it's munches fuel like its going out of fashion. Is that how these are?

if your heavy footed they are thirsty but can realise 40 mpg if careful.

did you buy a bosch maf???? aftermarket ones tend to be crap, and are easily killed by the car. If it is bosch its likely a faulty replacement

+1 it is not uncommon to get a duff replacement.

Again if you unplug MAF and it runs better there is your answer the MAF is suspect...

That's very annoying, being totally honest I usually would've brought Bosch, but what with one thing and another, £30 seemed much more appealing than £67 haha. Still, you live and learn :).

check the numbers but heres an example, obviously get new if you can but i had nooooooo money so this is far from ideal but a solution that may work

Well I may be able to get a new one cheap yet, my Dad has got a trade account at Euro Car Parts, but I'll have to see how much they are. We shall see :).

he did, but they are currently attached to my boot lid, mmmmmmmm lovely wiper goes back, and forward, and back and forward. Only cost a tenner for both too, what a bargain haha.

over on scottish vag there is another vrs breaking, want me to ask about availability and then post it to you??????

I'll probably de-wipering mine soon, haven't quite decided yet, do I need to keep you in mind for parts if I do?

Genuine Bosch now fitted, however I'm still getting this idle problem. It dips about 100-200 rpm on so when just sitting there? It's fine with it unplugged though? Any ideas?

Should point out that it hunts for about 20 seconds, then it's fine, then starts hunting again after about a minute or so.

How long has the new one been in for ?

I may have one by then but does not hurt to try me, cheers.
