Dual Mass Flywheel - can it cause kangarooing?

Featured Replies

Would a worn DMF result in the following symptoms?

Changing down from third into second gear approaching a junction, as I release the clutch pedal the car kangaroo's.

I can either release the clutch completely or accelerate to stop it.

It's almost as if there is too much slack somewhere in the drivetrain.

I know the DMF is partly worn as I can get it to slip/judder if I try and accelerate in too high a gear / low RPM.

The judder I can live with, however if I knew a new clutch/DMF would eliminate the kangarooing I'd be tempted to shell out the £600 to get it done.

Ta!

Not seen a worn DMF show the symptoms you describe. Only judder/vibration when at idle, or under acceleration.

Sounds like the clutch isn't releasing fully?

Sorry to hijack, and I'm not sure if this is related, but my car has developed a problem over the last few months since it's been a bit cooler.

When releasing the clutch, sometimes it will engage smoothly, and sometimes it will engage very suddenly, which is kind of annoying. It makes reversing in to car parks a nightmare because there is no fine control over the car at slow speeds. (It's a Sachs clutch, btw)

If in neutral at a standstill I pump the clutch, you can hear a rattling which gets louder the more you pump the pedal. Then when engaging first and setting off it will be a hard engage.

I'm really thinking it is a DMF problem, and / or an issue with the release bearing.

The clutch not releasing fully could be close. Is this a symptom of a worn clutch or a worn slave/master cylinder?

The clutch pedal is also very soft, especially compared to the clutch in the wife's Octavia, it's also a fraction slower to release too.

The £600 I quoted is for the DMF, clutch and release bearing.

The slave cylinder is inside the gearbox right? Would it be cost effective for them to swap this out too then as a precautionary measure when the gearbox is off for the DMF replacement?
