Awesome build there buddy will keep following this.

Cheers for that, been a labour of love over the past few years but getting there slowly.

I have a vRS MK2 with CTHE motor so a "tad " different from your oil guzzlers :). To make any kind of half ar$ed assessment more date would be needed of course. One thing I know about diesels is that you do not lean out the AFR to get more power :). My guess was they were trying to avoid a massive torque speed and a smoke screen when that big turbo was coming in, which is all right, but it could to with a bit of TLC to make the curves a little bit smoother. I'd personally go for a flatter curve so peak early and stay there to the red line. But I might be talking b00110ck$ here of course :)

I believe John has already started looking into smoothing it out and getting the power to come in sooner aswell as continuing the power to the redline, so I'm sure he will give me a shout in due course once he has fettled it.

An update, granted it's not the best news but hey. Was on my way over to John on Saturday evening for my new map to hold power more to the redline and whilst on the motorway I had a sudden loss of power whilst overtaking.

I managed to get the car to coast onto the hard shoulder when the revs dropped to around 500rpm and the car cutout and refused to fire up again.

Having managed to remove the cambelt cover, I noticed a few chunks of teeth missing off the belt, so I am going to make a start on stripping the head off the car tomorrow morning now I have had it recovered to my work.

20150404_210322_zpsbsg33pq3.jpg

Luckily I have my spare engine still from my red vRS so I will most likely just switch heads to get the car back on the road quicker.

Ah man sorry to hear about that. Lucky you have the spare engine, but hopefully this one isn't too damaged

  • Author

Cheers Charlie, lets hope it isn't. The belt hasn't actually snapped but has chunks of teeth missing off a section of it.

Left it like this after a few hours this morning, pretty much ready for head to come off.

Update time, managed to get the head removed thursday morning and started to check over what damage had occured.

Upon removing the cambelt covers I found the missing teeth from the belt.

20150408_094422_zps24jbqtfm.jpg

This was the belt which I removed, pretty much in perfect condition apart from the section of teeth missing.

20150408_101756_zpsjeigkqd8.jpg

Once the head was pulled off I could see that all 4 exhaust valves had literally just kissed the crowns of the pistons.

20150408_104914_zps5qtvi6vs.jpg

So I set about stripping the head down to find out what damage had happened fully.

One bare head

20150409_094017_zpsd2m1pa2j.jpg

All the head internals.

20150409_090746_zpsuwkm6fbd.jpg

Upon checking, all 4 hydraulic lifters for the exhaust valves were damaged.

20150408_175317_zps5wcuuil2.jpg

So I made a (very expensive) order from TPS for all the replacement parts needed to put the car back together.

20150410_101946_zpstket8eek.jpg

Continuing my bad luck they only had 1 valve in stock so I couldn't start rebuilding the head, but I have decided I may have the head modified whilst it's off and have all the seats cut and valve stem oil seals changed also.

Sorry to see this engine in such a poorly state...

Any clue why the cambelt might have failed like that? You did mention it appeared to be in a perfect state... apart form a section of missing teeth :(

But hey, perhaps it is a blessing (not a financial one) in disguise. As you wrote, while having the head off it is a perfect time to have some nice work done to it.

If I had the time and money I'd have it wet flowed, uprated the valve springs and get the valves properly massaged into place after having the seats re-cut. Valve guides are worth changing as well. But I suppose I am teaching you to suck eggs :)

P.S. I always like a picture of that nice mani :)

Car still isn't sorted yet, been doing it before and after work so only managing a couple of hours a day.

Earlier on this week one of the lads at work set about sorting the head out for me, all the seats was recut with 2 angles ground on the valves. The head was also slightly modified by having the ports smoothed slightly and having some material removed around the valve guide.

The head was also skimmed 4thou to ensure that it was flat.

The car is pretty much back together, just need to fit expansion tank and fill with coolant and fresh oil and then set the injectors up. Finish work tomorroq at 12 so thats tomorrow afternoons plan.

She's alive!!! Setup the injector backlash yesterday afternoon, dropped the oil and filled up the coolant and then cranked her over and after a few minutes she eventually purred into life.

Been a while since I posted anything in here due to having no internet at the new house.

Car hasn't had much done to it lately, gave it a quick polish the other week but she is in need of a full detail which maybe happening in a few weeks when I am off work. I'm also looking to rebuild at least the rear calipers with new seals and pistons due to having a sticking handbrake when I am also off.

I have started to tidy up the front end by flatting and painting the fog light surrounds. The grill which is also stone chipped will have the same treatment and also have new style badges fitted once complete.

Will get them clear coated then flat and polished and refitted to the car and the grill surround will get the same treatment in the same colour.

I miss having a garage!!

Bad weather a few nights has delayed thing's, but managed to finally get the fog surrounds clear coated on Sunday, here is the finished article, don't think I will flat them as the finish is good enough.

Wow been a while since I have been on the site let alone updated this thread so thought I would fill you all in with whats happeneing.

Earlier on this year I decided to set about giving the cars interior a good clean. I removed all the seats and spent a good 7hours cleaning the carpets and cleaning and conditioning the leathers.

This weekend I have set about giving the car a service, I bought the stuff a few weeks ago and when I went to drop the oil I spotted I had been sent the wrong stuff so had to run about to find a replacement. Ended up with Quantum to fill it up.

20151107_121412_zpsfuspnxvc.jpg

I also purchased a full set of rebuild kits for the front and repair calipers which I am looking to carry out the next few weeks.

Also lately I had noticed a small boost leak had appeared so after servicing the car I set about removing the front bumper to solve the issue.

In the end it turned out the leak was small but was being caused by a clamp/hose not fully sealing due to the pipe being too long. I trimmed the silicone hose down and reclamped and that has solved the issue.

20151128_150423_zpsbiiymnli.jpg

I left the car overnight sat like this before refitting the front bumper today with the addition of a new front aplitter after my last one was killed after hitting a ratchet strap on the middle lane of the M6, sump took a battering aswell but survived.

Looking great Adam. What centre caps did you get for your alloys? I've been looking and can't seem to find the right size.

Thanks Charlie, I'm starting to get my love back for the car so thats good. I'm not sure fella, the wheels already had the centre caps when I bought them I just bought replacement gel badges for the centre.

Haven't really been online much lately but thought I had beat come and update my thread.

Over the Christmas period I set about sorting the brakes out. I started by stripping down the rears to begin with.

20151228_130413_zpsrnw82jmi.jpg

I fitted all brand new seals, new sliders etc. Aswell as giving them a coat of paint.

20151231_123025_zpsst5uyqsy.jpg

20151231_130020_zpsozzhjtor.jpg

When I pulled the front calipers off I was greeted with next to no pads remaining.

20160110_114548_zpsjvbbp4hc.jpg

As with the rears I gave the carriers and calipers q good rub down and a clean up ready for paint.

20160110_132013_001_zps9jp8fiiy.jpg

20160110_152729_zpsxfgkvxrd.jpg

I fitted all brand new pistons and seals and slider pins once again. I decided to opt for the Brembo HP2000 pads for upfront.

20160111_184540_zps9fd3g2vh.jpg

This brings me upto earlier this week. One evening whilst coming home from work, I put my foot down slightly to over take a car and lost all power, can sounded rough and a cloud of smoke was coming from the back.

I managed to gently drive the last mile or so home and popped the bonnet to be greeted with the following sight

20160210_212016_zps9l4yjmt4.jpg

20160210_212010_zpsd6kkgx6d.jpg

It seems as though I have sufferred the same fate as Alex, and that with think it has blown a piston. The car still runs but knocks like mad and there is a strong smell of diesel on cold startup. I had lost very little oil, with the dipstick just on Min mark.

So today I popped the bonnet and made a start on clearing off the oil ready for the strip down.

The plan of action is to finish pulling the engine tomorrow and make a start on getting it all stripped down.

My route of attack is to bore the engine out to 2 litre and fit H beam rods along with a set of uprated DSSR injectors.

We need to get to the bottom of why they both went seemingly the same way. Save many others potentially having the same fate!

What a shame, ive just read 8 pages .... i dont like sad endings :P

I hope you get it sorted, you seem to have the resources and expertise. Good luck with it fella

Btw where are you in Lancs?

We do indeed Alex, so many people are running these GTB's now so could be potentially saving people a lot of hedache in the future. All being well I should have a proper answer tomorrow evening as to what has actually gone wrong.

We modify and build cars to break them and make them better once again, its all part and parcel of being a modder I suppose at the end of the day. Just a pain when you have spent so long working on it for it suddenly just to go but it gives me room and an excuse to have a play internally and make it stronger, hence for going 2 litre with the H beam rods and uprated injectors.

I'm from near Burnley.

Cracking read this build thread.. must be cracking to be able to engineer your own parts! I'd love to be able to do that or even know where to begin.. takes it to a whole new level.

Shame to see that things have gone pop.. I'm contemplating a gtb in the near future, not as big as yourself/Alex though - only a 1756.. do you think this concerns them all or just the larger ones running more power?

Ye its a challenge, would just be good if it was lighter on the pocket. Im in Chorley so not far. Dont suppose you can recommend a paint shop and a body shop?

Personally I'd go for a 2260. John has comparison logs of them with a 1756 showing that a properly setup one will come on-boost as quick or quicker than a 1756.

The smaller GTB's have shown themselves to generate higher EGT's when over 2 bar than a 2260. Kev melted his engine!!

The joys of modding [emoji12]

I had started to consider a 2260 when I saw that the price difference was neither here nor there.

Xmans listing for the 1756 say no more than 2 bar.. I presume keeping it within that keeps a hold on things?

Will wait and see what your guys conclusions are.

2bar in a gtb1756 would make a nice reliable motor.

Be good to see the damage once you have the engine apart Adam.

Shame to see this Adam. Hope you get to the bottom of it and look forward to seeing it progress
