Sat Nav Genuine Skoda or Cheap alternatve

Featured Replies

On my Amundsen+, and also my free upgrade to the Kenwood DNX521DAB, the ACC controls are not showing on their display screens because my Fabia 1.2 DSG Elegance doesn't have separate temperature settings for both the passenger and driver, only one global setting. I believe the car needs to offer this facility before the screens can display them (The Octavia does for example).

Which unit are you testing? Do you have any pictures?

Sorry for the blurry pics, but I'm still sorting out some niggles.

Everything shall be revealed when it's done ;)!

thats one of those cheap chinese ones, about £180 online.

Thinking about one myself..

Your free to link the one I got for 180 £ ;).

Just because it looks like the cheap ones doesn't say it got the same parts inside as the others :).

Probably not what you are after, I use NavMii £2.99 form app store onto my Iphone, it uses opensource maps and updates regularly.

And yet still : you can't say that because you haven't seen the inside off it.

I haven't specifically checked inside that one either but I have noticed differences between the cheap both in appearance and on the inside.

It might be good, it might be bad.

All I can say is that the one I'm testing is above expectations!

will the RNS-315 fit directly into a fabia monte carlo without any additional wires etc. it seems that this head unit already has bluetooth installed to it so i would need a parrot kit. can anyone say for sure that the colour of the unit matches fabia interior also where you put the GPS unit

When you see OEM units like this for a third of the price I'd be tempted. I already had the Amundsen+ installed (it was approx £550) so maybe next time? It bugs the t1ts off me that car manufacturers charge so much for pretty shonky technology. How can the very latest iPad* be £400 and do everything an in car unit can do and more? It can only be a matter of time before someone replaces the whole gammut of climate controls, audio, satnav, video, Bluetooth, reverse camera, etc.. with an iPad dock.

*other tablets are available.

Does anyone have the Kenwood DNX521DAB head unit? I have this as an upgrade on my Fabia and the iPod lead is permanently connected to the rear USB socket and hangs loose so I can plug the iPod in. But how do I update the SatNav software? I've tried via an SD card and a CD-R but no joy. And I've even loaded the software onto my iPod with Dropbox but I still can't get the Kenwood to "see" the software. Any idea what I can try next?

@Confide

Would you mind giving us a write-up on what is involved in installing such a unit as you are testing now, what ECU "coding" is necessary, any loss/gain in functionality when a car is already fitted with GSMII hands free system etc?

I'd be tempted but on the other hand Nexus7 is a great altrnative

Cheers mate :)

I had the Amundsen+ and the Bluetooth handsfree kit pre-installed in my new Fabia and the dealer swapped both of them for the Kenwood DNX521 DAB head unit at no charge. But I've now lost the voice control and steering wheel control for the phone, and the bluetooth quality is not as good as before. Plus I don't have the SatNav and phone call info displayed on the MaxiDot either. But I gained the DAB Radio and DVD Player. Swings and Roundabouts I guess.

You see, I would not go for that. Voice control and steering wheel phone control are essential for me. Hence I need to know, as much as possible, what the trade offs are going to be before spending £££.

Sorry for slow responses, silly lady decided to give birth to a child so I'm focused at that!

Will get back as soon as I find time to breathe!

Congrats mate! I have two myself :) Your first one?

Luckily you are in Sweden which has really well developed support for parents (at a cost of very high taxes) and blokes have as much paternity leave as women maternity :).

There is no hurry with the write up, provided you are up for it, so concentrte on your new arrival. Congratulations again!

Thanks! Yes, it's the first one =)!

Yeah, we got pretty good regulations here in Sweden regarding child-stuff!

Ofc I will write my thoughts, but as said before... I will need some time =).

  • 1 month later...

hey confide any news on this yet ?

any chance of a link to the one you are using and are you still happy with it ?

Hey there and sorry for forgetting this!

Children, car-shows and crap takes way too much time!

There is no link to this one, I won't be importing these units. Small irritating problems which I wouldn't deem acceptable!

Microphone too low, slow reading on USB, bad support...

Great thanks for the heads up

Samsung galaxy s3 with copilot traffic app best £26 I've spent in a long time. It works better, costs less to keep updated, and less wires flopping around than a tom tom XL that I used to own. I simply could not consider spending best part of £200 on satnav, let alone the price of an oem unit.
