Sat Nav Genuine Skoda or Cheap alternatve

Featured Replies

I am thinking of changing the Radio in the Fabia VRS. i Have been looking at the kenwood and the Genuine skoda Amunsden Both are a bit pricey and i was wondering if anyone has experience of a cheaper alternative something like this.

Seems a lot for the money. Any advice appreciated.

The Amundsen is worth about £50. Hateful.

The kenwood looks nice but v pricey.

Not sure about the Autoradio.

I know I wasn't much help but at least you can disregard the Amundsen IMO.

Just TomTom on an iPhone? I use mine right now in my Octavia and will continue in the Fabia when it arrives (hopefully Monday!!). It updates traffic every 3 minutes and uses Bluetooth to make turn announcements. You are also much less likely to leave it in the car!!

Another Norfolk VRS owner soon to be then. I have a TomTom 920 with brodit vent fix but wanted something more permanent. Looks like the Chinese unit can be fitted up with reverse cam and other bits.

An Asus/Google Nexus 7 has gps bulit in, bigger screen than your average sat nav and much cheaper than the skoda sat nav/ that kenwood

I complained to my dealer that my 2012 Fabia Elegance Amundsen didn't feature DAB like it says in the manual so they replaced it for the Kenwood DNX521DAB free of charge. Voice-activated dialling is now gone but I now have a better iPod interface, a bigger screen, and DAB

I have the 520 (previous model less DAB

Whats your thoughts on its touch screen? In find lacking IMO

The touch screen is a bit sluggish, but I hated the Amundsen. I do find though that the EQ section is pretty useless hence me wanting to get the speakers changed. And I do miss the voice activated bluetooth I had before, this is more basic but works OK I guess.

i think the kenwood unit through skoda is good, bluetooth is good, you have dab, ipod connection etc. i find it easy to use but it is pricey

I dont really think its worth the price they ask for the unit but in general a good unit. Kenwood and garmin based nav with blutooth cant really go wrong

I'm very pleased wwith the "Amundsen+" unit supplied with the car. Phone easily connects via bluetooth without it leaving my pocket. Voice control works well, phone works well. All my music on a SD card gives a list of albums on the screen, no need for CD's or for iPod or MDI module as its all easily there.

NAV integrates well with the maxidot display showing a clear visual instruction for 20 secs before a manouvre then reverting back to trip computer or whatever. Maxi also displays phone menu incl callers names etc. when making or receiving a call

The more expensive Columbus 510 unit with HDD and 6 disc cd player is IMHO a redundant item with 32 gig and more on a SD card fulfilling all the functions of the 6cd changer and HDD. Though it has a bigger screen and a much bigger price. I considered buying one but now I realise absolutely no need.

I have the Amunsden in the fabia Vrs and had the same radio in the Leon and its a great wee radio and does the job well!

I'm going to test out a chinese unit next week with rearview-camera, TV, GPS and alot off other fun stuff!

This test is going to be very thorough regarding quality off the screen, sound, menu's and so on!

Be sure to check in the Fabia II-section ;).

If you want something particular checked out on it, gimme a pm or write here in the thread!

I'm not hijacking the thread here, just going to try to help people out and test the cheap-stereo out =D!

Confide-- Sounds great ,looking forward to your appraisal.

Can you check that the sat nav works with 7 digit post codes and that it shows the route on the maxi-dot. Thanks.

Just give me a 7 digit postcode and I'll check it out when I get it.

Anything else?

Try ST21 0JL it is Raleigh Hall in Staffordshire England. Check if it shows the air - con settings on the screen . Thanks.

or a pioneer unit (without nav) with app mode and use your mobile. Nav Free is available for the iPhone (don't know about Android) and will show up on the units monitor.

However, you do loose the MDI interface with this but the 4500 unit with DAB is only £400.

The iphones maps now include a tom tom based nav which quite effective.

I'm a bit of a cheap skate and went for the cheap unit, replacement rearview mirror with a camera and sat nav (plus lots of other android type cr*p I never use, like e reader, games movies!) can link a reversing camera as well and less than a cheaper Halfrauds satnav.

I would never pay for a factory fit sat nav as it goes when the car is sold.

TomTom XL for me; it's in it's third car now and still perfect.

You can take it indoors and plan journeys on your PC and keep it bang up to date with the latest satellite positions and other updates.

You can use it for walking too.

Hi had the Amundsen it was ok , when I sold the fabia and looked at it online in a garage for sale they had removed the satnav?, wouldn't spec satnav again not worth it IMO, just get good tomtom for £100 and use the rest on other toys for the car

@Confide - please check if the Fabia's Maxi-Dot display shows the SatNav and the Bluetooth phone. When I recently had my Amundsen+ upgraded to the Kenwood DNX521DAB I lost both of these features :-(

Keep the tips coming, thanks :-D!

Just got the unit at home and installed it, going to do some roadtesting the coming days.

Preliminary testing tho is that the sound-quality is really good (a notch better then SWING), picture-quality is alright and the rear-view camera is nice too have.

GPS works like a charm in Gothenburg atleast, but might be needing an update.

Will check up on the 7-digit post-code that was mentioned earlier!

Also, ACC doesn't show up on the screen but I'm talking with the manufacturer about the problems =).
