Have I made a mistake?

Featured Replies

Hi Skodall,

I currently have a Superb Combi SE 2.0CR 140PS in Cappuccino and have done a very happy 80,000 miles in it. I have ordered a Candy White Combi 1.6 Greenline Elegance and am now wondering if I am going to cope with the high gearing and lack of poke, even though I'm on the motorway most of the time.

Damn the tax man!

Any views?

Get yourself a test drive.

I've just changed my lease car from a BMW 118d to a Greenline Estate and was initially very sceptical about the 1.6 diesel engine. Had a test drive back in September and was very impressed with performance. First gear pull away is a bit slower, so I wait for a little bigger gap in the traffic than I used to, but the smoother gear change makes up for this, shifting easily into second then pulling away. On the A1 it cruises along in a nice and relaxed manner, but still has plenty of power for me to join from a short slip road.

So whilst on the face of it a 1.6 diesel sounds...just wrong...in reality it does the job and saves me money :)

Other cars I could have chosen included 2.0 diesel Passatts or Mondeos, with lesser specs, but the monthly repayments, and tax, were more than I wanted to pay.

I know tat I have a Fabie 2Greenline, so can't really compare, but I have been very surprised how much poke my little 1.2 dti engine has. You can really feel the turbo kick in after the couple of seconds lag you would expect. can only expect a 1.6 in a bigger car to be

Equally good. Get yourself a test drive definately. Sorry about bad typing, but my tablet has gone 7nsane!

You have to look past the cc of a car engine these days, I was highly skeptical of the 1.2TSI engine in the Yeti until I drove one. Now I am a convert. SWMBO's Yeti has never been a problem on the motorways or anywhere else.

Who'd have seen a 1 litre Mundano 10 years ago?

The only way to know for sure is to take it for a good test drive, and I don't mean 10 minutes either.

Did youhave a decent test drive it first? I'm fortunate in a strange way because I am PAYE and have to buy my own cars too so I can choose what I want with no hidden smack to the wallet from HMR&C.

It really does depend on how you drive and what you want from your car which is something only you can answer I'm afraid.

If there's not enough poke, get a Engine Management remap and look forward to approx 170BHP! Cost all of £300 or so. Easy! Might even improve further the fuel consumption.

I for one wouldn't be keen on taking a car with 105PS to 170PS when taking into consideration components such as the DPF, DMF, clutch and turbocharger.

120-125 maybe, 170? No........

Then there are the implications if driving it as a company car and the insurance.

You should have no problems getting used to it.

I got my Greenline SE twindoor on the 1st of September and I had an Octavia 1.8TSi with 160bhp before that.

You do sometimes miss the extra power mainly on fast A and B roads as you need to plan overtaking a bit more.

Its quite nippy around town dispite the low power in such a big car but it has enough torque.

On the Motorways it will happily cruise at 80 plus.

You soon get used to the gearing and it will pull 80 in 3rd gear.

I did the change due to company car tax but I'm very happy with it and I do 50,000 miles a year.

Hi

I was concerned about the same issue, having ordered a Greenline. My previous company car was a BMW 320d - 0-62 in 7.8s. However, I'm delighted. Doing 70 in 5th, I've still got enough useful power to accelerated out of situations. Consumption is 55-60mpg (on the computer). The ride is fine and the handling not bad - even compared to the BMW.

Done the 105 - 170 update (admittedly on the PD engine), excellent results (you shouold see the looks on 'boy racers faces when they see a 'boggo' fabia diesel leave them standing!), it's been done for over 4 years with no related reliability issues. Fuel economy increased by +10% (from about 49 to 54 brim to brim), and no adverse issues with driveshafts, gearbox or the like - the chances are these are used across the VAG range in more powerful cars so are well capable of the extra torque.

The only thing I would say is there is a slight tendency to torque steer especially if you use 'full wellie' with some lock applied, however I generally don't notice the difference usually, but use the extra oomph when travelling on the motorway or main roads (or when upsetting racers!). I travel up the A9 regularly from Pert to Inverness, the extra power for the hills plus the ability to safely overtake have to be experienced to be believed. Rarely do I do 'standing start' blasts.

My Superb may well be going from 170 to 211 bhp soon, but as that's got a DSG box, I'll be asking the outfit who do the mod, of there experience with this combination.

I would like to see where you can get a 1.6 TDI remapped to 170 BHP for £300?! Here in Denmark you can get 145-150 BHP for £600, but that is a proper "ECU out of the car" remap, and not just a increase of the railpressure etc.

As I said, not done on a CR, but the PD software update - via laptop - is around £300! Almost worth coming here and getting it done - although I guess it may be different on the CR - I have heard that the ECU needs to come out on that engine, but also that it's possible with it fitted. No doubt an expert will put us right!
