Steering wheel not sitting straight

Featured Replies

Any ideas why when my wheels on my car are straight the steering wheel sits a little of to the left????

Has it always done it since you've owned it? Could be something simple like the wheel was removed and put back on wonky.

I have the same problem and it annoys me too but don't want to mess with the airbags etc to fix it!

Whoever last did the tracking did a lazy job of it!

Could this not be to do with any bent steering arms etc?

Although this could have been caused by recent kerb/pothole damage or TCA rear bush breaking up.

Bending both front wheels in the same direction, unlikely in my opinion, but not impossible for it to happen.

Just the most likely reason I can think of is the tracking out. You never get the full story from 3 lines though.

Has it happened suddenly?

Did this happen overnight?

Have you owned the car long?

Have you had tyres fitted recently?

Had any other work done recently?

Have you drove on any bad roads that come to mind, enough to damage the car far enough to bend and damage steering components?

I had this after the sub frame was removed. Tracking was fine but wheel was off. Took it back to the garage and I think they just took the wheel off and put it back on straight

So i recon best bet is taking it to a garage no get i a good look over. The roads around mine are **** but not bad enough to bend anything. One thing that. Did go recently and when i think back the problem probably started with it was the flange that connects the drive shaft into the gear box gave up. I drove it very slowly to s garage about 5 miles in all before it totally gave up and i lost drive. Pinched part of different fabia and all was well afain apart from steering wheel??????

Sounds like the tracking has been knocked out.

I had this on our Cordoba.

They had replaced the wishbone and not done the tracking properly so the wheel was wonky. Wasn't pulling at all.

Got them to re-do the tracking and it straightened it out. Just taking the wheel off and putting it back on straight will probably leave the tracking off and probably just mask a potential tracking problem and result in tyre wear.

Never ever take the steering wheel off to correct the error, if you do you'll upset the steering angle sensor and it will think it has steering input when you have none. Taking the wheel off is definitely not the way to correct the error.

If the car is not pulling to either side, then all it needs is the alignment to be done properly by someone who knows what they are doing. If they say the tracking is correct then they are wrong, since if the steering wheel is placed in the straight ahead position then the front wheels will be pointing the wrong way (Slightly left or right).

In your pic it looks like you have a lowered car... Have you checked camber is then same either side, if they are different, it causes this. When I set up my punto, there was too much camber, which caused excess toe in, and it handled properly bad. Steering wheel was also about 30 degrees off.

Mines slightly out as the guy that done the tracking apparently has a slightly wonky eye lol just go get it tracked and ask to make sure the wheel is straight (I'm always afraid of sounding like a **** lol)

did the car have new springs before it was last tracked? if you fit new springs to a car and then get the tracking altered a fair few miles later when the springs have bedded in and settled the tracking will be out of alignment and need re adjusting
