Update on my Superb 1.8TSI SE Estate

Featured Replies

The Superb has now covered 30K miles, since buying new in July 2011. I have just had the front tyres replaced, which I think for such a big/heavy car, 30K miles from a set of front tyres is amazing (my previous Skoda, a 2,0TD Octavia got through front tyres every 18K miles). The tyres are 17" Pirelli P7 Cincuratos. The original tyres started to get noisy from 20K miles, especially with rumbling at low speed (so much so that I started to think a wheel bearing had failed), but with new rubber all is quiet once again.

It was a difficult decision to go for the petrol model rather than the diesel, with running costs being a big concern but with the VAT saving on the purchase price, a much shorter waiting time (therefore a better P/EX on the Octavia), almost twice the life out of a set of tyres and getting about 40 MPG long term average fuel economy, I reckon that financially, it was a good move.

The only issues I have had/are having are the usual glovebox rattle and a knocking noise from the rear of the car when going over bumps at an angle (i.e. the car is tilted to the left or right).

The car still impresses me with its comfort, space and compliant ride.

My Superb faired about the same on tyres, think I managed 28k before I had them replaced which I also felt was good performance. I too had Pirelli tyres from the factory, which seemed in contrast to alot of other users of a similar age.

The bump rattle over humps is apparent on all Superbs I think - know of a few other users who have had similar issues and mine does it too. Don't really consider it an issue more like the design/setup of the suspension.

How are you finding the SE spec? I added sunset glass and heated seats to mine but find that it has everything else that I need.

Hi

Interesting to hear that you also get this noise going over bumps - it sounds to me as if something like a cable knocks against the inside of the bodywork when there is vertical movement (such as going over a hump) AND when the car is at an angle (such as going over the edge of a mini roundabout). At the car's first service I asked the garage to look at the problem and not surprisingly when I went to collect the car they told me they could not reproduce the noise, so I took a technician out with me, with me driving and the noise was there immediately. He had a quick look, couldn't really work out where the noise was coming from and sort of lost interest. His advice was that until it got worse they couldn't do much about it.

The SE spec is perfect for me - I didn't need built in Sat Nav as I already have a Tom Tom, I prefer the Alcantara seats to all leather and didn't want to spend a fortune, especially as originally I had budgeted for another Octavia hatchback. The Superb cost me about the same as a 2.0 diesel Octavia Elegance hatchback. The only option I added to mine was automatic wipers. I don't miss the headlamp washers that were on my previous Octavia (it just means the screenwash lasts a lot longer!) although an auto-dimming rear view mirror would have been nice.

Cheers

Glen

I know what you mean about the screenwash issues on the Octavia with headlamp washers. I had the fuse takn out of mine.

I do a lot of miles and in the winter I was using 5lt of concentraded screenwash a week.

Cant say Ive noticed any knocking on my superb yet but Ive ony got 15k on the clock but I only got it in September so still time for it to appear.
