Steering/Ignition column problems

Featured Replies

Had a quick search but nothing fruitful appeared...

I have another problem now  looks like I got one of them problem cars!

When I take the keys out of the ignition, the radio stays on. Now it never used to do this, but only in the past day. The sound used to go off, and the lights on it too so I knew it had switched off.

I also have no steering lock - where the steering wheel locks in place with the keys out and you need to wiggle it to unlock it whilst turning the key. Again, only started today.

It used to make a click noise when I pulled the key out, this doesn't happen now!

I have no dash lights to suspect a fault, and as I mentioned this only started today.

Just a bit worried that the radio wont 'turn off' and drain my battery over night!

Is this something that the cold could cause, or is it just knackered?

If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I'll get it scanned in VCDS tomorrow to double check.

Thanks...

If its not clicking when you pull the key out it could be the S contact in the ignition barrell and that might explain why the radio won't turn off as its not recognising the key being taken out if the barrell. Just a thought

Ah right,

Thanks Almal.

That probably means replacing the barrel then! Great!

I'll disconnect the radio for now to stop battery drain, will get it looked at as well!

Thanks!

Seems to have fixed it self!

Must have been the cold weather!

Stupid snow!

i had a similar problem with the radio when a map light bulb died ....

Mine done the same. Bit of oil cleared it up. Think it's dust off the key or something. Try a blast of wd40 if it happens again.
