bonnet stay hole broken

Featured Replies

Hi

I Was checking screen wash etc yesterday,So i put the bonnet up and placed the stay in the orange plastic holder. When i moved the stay back out the plastic holder broke. I guess it was brittle due to the frost.

Does anyone have a part number or idea on cost and does it just pop out.

I've not been back out to check due to the rubbish weaher

Thanks

they're not the easiest thing to get the stay out of so think somebody must've had this happen and replaced before

Do not know the cost but they simply pop out - push up from underneath - and the new one pops in from the top.

Forget it, Go to b+q buy a cheap packet of plastic pipe clips fit with number plate strengh double sided tape. I have 2 off these on my new Blackline as the standard one opened up to easily and looked insecure, hope this helps.

I think he means the bit on the scuttle that it sits in when it's working, not the clips that hold it fixed to the bonnet.

Be interested in this as well

Yeh sorry didnt read it properly both ends of this set are crap.

Last night about to check the oil on the 2013 Octy and leaned-in. Next moment bonnet came down and pushed my head forward to rest on my shoulders. As I wondered what had happened I noticed the bonnet-stay had gone through this shoddy method of holding the bonnet up. Nice square empty hole where it had been! If I had been running the motor to check things and had had my hands on the wing I wouldn't be able to type this! Looking at getting gas struts.

http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/skoda-octavia-2-facelift/gas-strut-bonnet-for-skoda-octavia/?mobiletpl=1 But costly.

AliExpress seem to have them but can't yet find them.

It's taken 3-4 years to break and the replacement is worth GBP2.

My Octy is 10 years old.  I have the bonnet up every 2 weeks (emptying catch can) and the part hasn't broken, so maybe yours is a one-off?  I'd replace the original part and see what happens.

If you think it's a safety risk, prop the bonnet up with a calibrated broom handle.

Only had it for 4 weeks so just familiarising. Thinking of a gas-strut, much safer. Have a replacement available when next I go to town.

I'll try the bonnet trick, always having trouble with things:

I broke mine after trying to close the bonnet without moving the stay out of the way (10 years of owning a Golf with a gas strut and forgot the Octavia doesn't have one) Got one from ebay for a few quid

When I had the Subaru, a few of the guys fitted an aftermarket gas strut to the bonnet.  On some of them the strut was a bit strong and it kinked the bonnet.  Subarus are made out of aluminium foil, so the Octy might be a bit more resilient

a chap sorted a group buy for bonnet struts on here about 3 yrs ago i got one, think it was about £30  fitted easily and works perfectly to this day .

Thanks. Found that. When it landed on my head/shoulders it never felt like Al.

The 2 is a bit harder to mod as extra bits required. The mod only has 1 gas strut and an opinion is 350N. It almost seems as if the tailgate struts would suit but have to check. Superskoda do a kit, need to weigh-up cost of doing it myself.

That's what the local rep said and commented the bonnet was never opened when servicing. They had never met the problem before but the broken part is in-stock?

Mine broke ages ago when a mechanic lifted it too hard.

I'm always hopeful I'll find one in a scrappy however until I do the rod end sits on a convenient bolt head.

I wouldn't trust it on a windy day though and usually hold the bonnet with one hand before I stick my head under it.

Mine cracked in two when I went to pull the bonnet stay out one day.

I bought a new one from the Skoda dealer - £1.89 and it was in stock

You can't complain at that

Just picked one up. $AUS8.60.

The G262 temp thermistor ($AUS60-ish) had been ordered but workshop manual strange as for RHD cars it should have been C261 but both are the same resistive value. I'll take out the 'failed' one and compare them after using VCDS that's about to arrive.

Also ordered FL headlight protectors from Aliexpress as my insurance excess won't cover a busted one. ($AUS475 Trade! - Octi 3 ones are $AUS1800 each!!!) Fingers crossed they'll fit?

All a bit strange in comparison to tuning my Cooper S and Vincent Comet to half-race standards many years ago!

Not good news. They arrived and I couldn't fit them, they seem the correct size/shape but the rear 'clamp' lexan seems all wrong. They're very strong so don't bend to push over headlamp. I emailed Ali and got this back as "help?" http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTI1NjkxNDUwMA==.html Use Google translate but leave ads until finished then the vid arrives. It seems not for what I ordered and I can't see how applying this would make them fit? Costly to send back so if they help further it may be something I haven't thought of, don't think so. Have 2 options: heat them and bend the outside so they will slide over the headlamp. ; cut slots and see if I can fit that way but guess the lexan will break if not heated. Last resort would be to rivet some flat metal after cutting off a lot of the rear. Let you know result.

@anotherdownunder - are you sure those are headlight covers?

To me, they look like a replacement headlight lens, therefore you'll need to remove the old ones and then fit these in their place.

HEX-V2(3) arrived and it's magic! Had DTC dating back to 2012 but no DTC on Climatic? [Why didn't dealer thing pull this up?] Cleared DTC and the engine 01 never went until directly cleared. No DTC except that 'Environmental-thing' that went to 00000000 after a run to town and back. Interesting VCDS showed no faulty thermistor G262 so I cancelled it. Plucking up courage to check Groups 90 thru 94 just in case not in spec.
