Is it possible to use fronload cd AND CD Changer?

Featured Replies

I Have an Octavia II and was wondering if you can use both. When I got my car I tried putting a CD in the stereo and it wouldn't play, although the CD Changer works fine. The guy at the dealership told me you can only use the changer or the fronloader, not both. That sounds a bit fishy to me... Surely you should be able to do that!

What stereo is fitted?

I have the Stream MP3 and can play CD's in the headunit itself and from the changer.

Its a factory fitted stereo, not aftermarket.

What model is it? They fitted a few different ones in the Octavia.

I'll go have a look...

Nah that's crap. I've a stream MP3 too and you can choose to play the front CD or rear changer. Mine has thrown the odd wobbler over the years and done strange things but settles down again.

Both my Stream MP3 and the retrofit Bolero both used the in-dash unit in the headunit and the boot changer.

Could be that the in-dash unit needs a clean or is faulty.

What the dealer said is rubbish.

Yea mine is the Stream as well.

That was my thoughts as well.I hate these guys!

Then they are feeding you rubbish.

You can just press the CD button to switch between the In dash CD or changer whenever you like.

I would try cleaning it.

When we got ours I bunged a CD full of MP3's in and it took ages to load each song and would jump through a lot of the songs.

I took the disc out and cleaned it and it was fine.

Right, this is going to sound very stupid now, but to clean it, do you have to get something like a 'cleaning disc' or something. Like you used to get for casset tapes?

Pardon my ignorance!

When I put a CD in, it doesn't do anything and after a while says 'Disc Error'

Yes to clean the actual headunit you need one of those CD cleaners.

They are a CD with a little brush glued to them basically and will gently brush the lens and hopefully clean it.

Cool. I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Hi Axeman,

As above, the head unit on my previous Octy (06 4x4) "CD" button could be used to toggle between the multichanger and the CD player in the head unit. Just a thought here, were you using a production CD or one you've recorded yourself? I do remember having some issues with one I'd recorded (pre iPod days!) not being recognised.

Kind Regards

Ian

If it's a Stream it won't play MP3 files off CD - The Stream MP3 (funnily enough) will.

The CD changer won't play MP3 CD's either.

The Stream MP3, Bolero and Columbus all work with the factory fitted CD changer AND the one built in to to the head unit. I've had all of them and can testify to them all working correctly. This statement only applies to pre-recorded CD's and direct copies (not to MP3 files).

Just to second what KBPhoto says, you can use the Stream MP3 and multichanger together as I did until I upgraded to Columbus (which also works in conjunction with the mulitplayer).

I did find, though, that the Stream was a bit finicky with CD-R's - some it would play and some got the disc error message. I guess it may be dependent on what software was used to convert the tracks or burn the disc.

Something else I discovered was that, although it has a selector button for both, it will only allow a multichanger OR auxillary input not both but if the problem is with playing CD's in the headunit it obviously can't be down to that

I have the AUX input in the armrest and a CD changer.

Pressing the CD button cycles through CD, CD changer and AUX.

CD changer & Aux input can co-exist. Depends upon how it's wired up.

Some Boleros don't support external CDC.

I suspect the wiring job was less than expert....

Some Boleros don't support external CDC.

Are you able to clarify which ones do or don't? And whether it is a factory wiring issue or an issue with the actual Bolero model?

Ah, good old Skoda dealers.....

My Stream MP3 had a boot mounted CDC and an auxillary out when I bought it - except that the CDC wouldn't work.

Skoda investigated and said previous owner had wired aux into CDC output and that I would have to choose which one i wanted to keep as it couldn't do both.

Could just be coding ;)

The alternative would be to look for another Stream or Stream MP3 on ebay:

......make sure it comes with code though.

....or upgrade to a Bolero (in-dash 6 disc changer)

10 minutes to swap over.

Ah, now that would make more sense! You can get aux-in / CDC emulators (allows mp3 playback at the expense of the CDC). However, neither should affect the in-dash unit.

My bolero won't link to my changer. Only offers the 6 on screen unless I need to select somewhere else as it definitely powers the changer

Not the coding, I had 2 different Boleros in the same car.

One was fine with the CDC, the other wouldn't accept coding for CDC, it came up with an error that the coding was out of range when the box was ticked.

General consensus was that the newer Delphi model, which also had an issue with the Backlight brightness, wouldn't accept an external CDC.

All of the wiring was correct in terms of the correct pins for CDC and AUXIN.

From memory the pins for the CDC control were not functional.
