sound deadening

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. As title suggests I am looking to sound proof my car. I have been looking for cheaper alternatives to sound deadening materials made for cars, so I came across this Flashing tape stuff, a lot people says it works like a dream and much cheaper.

I know that a lot of you would say "buy proper stuff" don't buy cheap, as it is often not as good. But not all of us can afford to spend hundreds of £ on sound deadening.

So have anyone tried this stuff? For 30 quid I can do whole car more or less.

How heavy is each roll?

How many rolls do you think youll need?

sounds cheap

Don't know about weight, will go to shop in a minute. I want to cover all doors, boot. I was looking at about 6sq/m. I found this http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-mat-bulk-pack.html it is £20 per sq/m.

@john123 as I said, not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of £.

its not designed for the job and while it will be better than nothing you wont be impressed.

Why do you want to deaden that much of the car?

.................do you want me to give you the best advice i ever have given anyone ??????? :sun:

Car is from 94, so there is no sound deadening whatsoever behind door cards or in the boot. And I want to install new speakers and a sub, want to make most of them.

I know what you will say, but say it. ;)

I am open to suggestions, alternatives etc.

so it is rattles you want to stop and not road noise?

Deadening wont to anything to stop road noise.

With ragards to flashing tape its a waste of money. You will have to fit loads of layers for it to be anyware near a decent 4mm or 2mm deadening product and by then you'd spent the same as you'd have spent on deadening.

Car being Audi, floor is as solid as it can be, but I can hear cars going by from door side quite a lot. And rattles are another thing, but for that I will use that anti squeak tape.

So how about this then? http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-mat-bulk-pack.html Any good?

silent coat is good stuff.

BUT you wont reduce road noise with it, if thats what you want you are wasting your money.

Sound deadening deadens the pannels to stop them resonating

Main reason for sound deadening is that I will put new speakers in, so just get nicer sound. And how can I reduce road noise, not that I really need it.

you dont get "nicer sound" magicaly from fitting deadening.

I'd also recomend a wave diffuser behind each speaker and each speaker mounted on 18mm mdf minimum. Birch ply if possible.

As for making it quieter. You need a noise barrier and a mass loaded vinyl which make things very pricey.

There is a cheap way to do it, doesnt work that well mind you. Thats to buy underlay. I tried it using a product called Cloud 9. Ive seen a thread on talk audio about a cheap who deadened his golf fully (floor, boot, doors etc) then on the entire floor covered it in cloud 9 underlay then put the carpet back and got an improvement but you need to go all out to see any improvement

So you suggest not to do whole doors, but just work on bit where speaker is? I found this; http://audiovisualworld.co.uk/shopping/skinz-acoustic-sound-wave-diffuser.html But have no idea how much of it I get for £15ish. So I just put it behind the speaker, so bass reflects nicely?

I am not sure about floor on mine, as it is not like on Octy, just 2mm fabric, it is foamy like and much more "heavy duty".

do the whole doors (inner and outer skin) but also once thats done put the wave diffuser directly behind the speaker. It stops the backwave going all over the place and gives a much better midbass response

you mean stick underlay in doors or use that Silent Coat? lol

EDIT: just came across this. Even if I have to buy one for each door, isn't that expensive.

Thats a good deal, one for each door should certainly help for sure

but it wouldn't cover whole doors tho.

it wouldnt no. Would cover a lot but not all of it. As I said, you want to cover the outerskin with deadening too

The front doors of my civic have been deadened inner and outerskin. If you tap the doors they dont resonate/echo at all. Thats the difference between deadened and not

Best way to go would probably be just buy around 2sq/m of silent coat, and use that wave diffuser behind every speaker. But for boot I could use underlay tho. :D

you could use underlay in the boot, it might help reduce the noise from the road. Not much though

OK, thanks mate. Will let you know what I decide on this.

no problem :)

......my opinion is dont Waste your time and Money, its not worht it.

And just remeber that deadning will make the car heavier and use more fuel.

In order to get it to have a good effect you have too deaden all of the car ,roof, floors ,door ,boot etc, and you will see improvement if you instal some subwoofers in the back etc.

i deaden the doors and boot ,it took me a couple a days to put in as this stuff has to be soften with a blow dryer in order to form it to the shape of the doors plus Money costs wasnt worth it in the end as the improvement is small road noise has been cut Down a lit bit and it has made the car haevier = more fuel consumtion.

i bought my stuff from a guy from the talkaudio.co.uk WHO is a judge i n car audio competion and Sells some good stuff cheap.

............need more help let me know :)
