Smoking on Startup

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anyone can help me with a problem with my Fabia 1.4 diesel. On start up it is very smokey. I assumed it was just a glow plug gone, but My friend checked the glow plugs and they are all fine.

I wonder if there is a cold start sensor problem or something similar, as once the car is warmed up, it seems to be running OK.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Don't worry. My vRS does this sometimes. It's only a little unburnt diesel.

Thanks for the reply. I think it is a bit more than the unburnt fuel though, as it is also running really rough until warmed up as well as being really smokey. It used to put out hardly any smoke(For a diesel) when starting.

The glow plugs on my old octavia were fine when I checked them but the car started better when I changed them.

One day I'll post a video of mine smoking on a cold start - its all fine. :D

I think I will change the glow plugs anyway, as I already brought new ones thinking it was the problem.

condensation in the exhaust causes smokey start ups. Its nothing to worry about.Especially on cold mornings too!

Aye i thought this was a bad thing when i first got the car but its pretty common on cold days.

You'll notice it goes after 5 minutes of driving.

My vrs sounded rough as hell this morning and a large puff of white smoke, glad i've seen this thread as I was worried :)
