Car got hit

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I'm in need of some advice please.

Firstly no one was hurt at least that I know of.

I was woken up at 5 am this morning by the police, someone hit my car outside my house and then locked thier vehicle up and abandoned it. The police now have the vehicle and I have the registration number and police incident number. Basically my car is pretty ruined, numberplate, crash bars, headlights, bonnet, bumper and probably rad all need replacing...without forcing the bonnet I'm not sure what other damage. I've spoken to my insurance and waiting on a call back to give all the details.

How will this affect my ncb and next years premium? With the kind of damage stated will my car be a write off (it's a 54 plate mk1 vrs with 60k on the clock).

Can't begin to say how I'm feeling at the minute, what is wrong with people that they can't even stop and admit what's happened.

As a side note the other car had no signs of forced entry etc and the doors were locked so obviously not stolen.

What actions would you all take in this situation, can get them prosecuted or is that something the police decide, I've spoken to my insurance but that was 4 hours ago and I'm still waiting on a call...they didn't even take the other car reg etc yet.

Thanks Gav.

Well sorry to hear that, but i think if it was the actual owner of the car was the driver you can claim his/her insurance if the police charge him/her, but Askmid have a service, if you pay £4 they give you the cars details, and insurer, so might be worth looking into and calling his/her insurance company, cause sounds to me as if it was a drink driver, as it was crashed then locked up

hopefully there insured

if not you we claim off your insurance but your premuim will go up its a pita

best bet see how much damage plenty being broken might be able to repair very cheap

Drink driver was my first thought aswell TBH. No sign of forced entry, locked and abandoned in situ.

Thanks guys, yea I'm betting drink driver, looks like thier jeep slid on some ice but it also had a light cluster missing from the rear and damage to the passenger side so I'm guessing mine wasnt the first hit.

If I have to claim off my insurance I will. Hopefully I won't though, if they are insured then will that affect my premium next year and if they aren't isn't there a uninsured scheme through insurance that I can claim off?

I'm just shooting ideas tbh as I'm really pi33ed still at the scum bag

Also the police told me that the car had recently been valeted and had some dealership for sale info in the car...looking like it was a forecourt car that a employee tool home. Now I may not have done the right thing next as I phoned the dealership to find out what they knew and they are saying that the car was sold 3 months earlier although why would it still have the for sale stuff (window notice with price) etc still on the passenger seat especially if it had recently been valeted....god I'm becoming really distrustful

Well... They'd obviously had a drink.

No doubt they'll be reporting their car 'stolen' next.

Sorry to hear about this though.

yup, depends on the outcome from the owner, its likely however they will claim its stolen, then you will end up having to claim on your policy to cover your costs so your premium will go up. Sorry to hear dude!

DVLA should know when the car was last sold/registered..... However they probably won't tell you - they should be able to tell the police.

yes under data protection i doubt they will release the info to you.

its a tough one, been thinking about this since my last posts.

All cars are required to have 3party liability, assuming the car has that, in theory, you should be able to claim from the other parties insurance, if they hit you. However the twist is, they will no doubt say their car was stolen, in which case they were not driving, however its still their car, and in theory their policy should cover 3rd party losses, but thats where i think it will get complicated.

Of course, if there is no cover in place, ie if car was sorn'd or uninsured, then its yours that will have to cover your car, and then your premium will go up, and you may lose ncd.

If there is cover from the owner, then a lengthy wrangle will unfold over who has liability, due to the car being stolen (if thats the case) and you will still end up claiming on yours (which then will affect your ncd/premium) until your insurer can recover losses from the other party.

thats my understanding, would be good to hear any corrections to this

Surely if it was stolen and reported then any damage that was caused while it was stolen would be covered by their insurance?

Phil

If their insurance doesn accept liabilty, you can claim through the MIB, a government scheme for these kind of scenarios, however the claiming process is very long and they value your car less than what it actually should be. MIB should pay out but a said, its a lengthy process.

yes thats the problem, and MIB due to timescale means you claim on your own policy in the meantime till they can recover losses.

If they were drunk, their insurance may not cover them anyway. I thought I always saw such a clause on insurance? Or does that only apply to fully comp claims against damage they do to their own car?

It's my understanding and also hope that if they were drunk then thier insurance would cover my costs but not the costs to thier car and if it has been stolen then yes there's the uninsured scheme but I was not aware that they valued the cars lower. If it becomes a write off I will be arguing for every penny she's worth due to low mileage etc. I've claimed (non fault) on a motorbike once and ended up settling £500 lower than my value but £1000 higher than the insurance value so arguing can pay off.

As has been noted though it takes time and I need a car to get me around.

Thanks for the info/suggestions and support guys....you've all helped me to calm down and think rationally. Really appreciate forums like this and the people involved at times of distress. Yes it's just a car but that car has been my pride and joy from the first day.

I recon you could fix it for around 100 if not to bad

I have a crash bar and headlights and insicators also have radiator etc etc

do you have pics of the car?

Police will give you the registered owner's details. Your insurers should sort out his/her insurers.

Can u get any pics up, and btw take as many pics as you can, more proof for you.

well if they claim it as stolen means there gona need to be a forensics done on the car, so if thats the case it works out better for you, cause if it does turn out to be a employee then they are screwed eithere way

Thtat's grim. I hate those sh1ts who do a runnner. Shurely the police will be able to tell you who the last owner was- if it's the garage they say it was then plod should be looking to prosecute who ever's lying for purgery/assisting an offender.

Might be worth trying to claim direct from the other insurance company- ask your insurance company that if doing it that way whether it'll protect your NCB because your not claiming via them. you can always revert to them dealing if it doesn't pan out?

cheers

I have a couple of pics of both cars and have spoke to the police again, due to data protection they won't tell me anything and simply say to leave it to my insurance company. I'm waiting on my insurance to contact me back but I guess that will be tomorrow now in normal office hours. I've never posted pictures to hear before I'm assuming I have to use photo bucket or something so I will look into that now.

I very much doubt that someone who has "stolen" a car then is shaken up by a low speed crash has the presence of mind to lock the vehicle and leave the scene. It all sounds very dodgy.

I hope you can get a satisfactory resolution to all of this and that the driver and any others involved get prosecuted.

I believe you have 24 hours to report an accident, hopefully their time has run out.

Good Luck

Hopefully the image is working. Looks like the headlights work but I have to force the bonnet to find out more which I don't want to do till I move the car to my works yard. The damage unfortunately looks a little worse in real life. Fingers crossed I get this sorted soon.
