Rough Road Package - Worth Having?

I know I said I'd shut up on this topic but, for what it's worth, in relation to post #22 above, on my current Yeti I bought both the electric driver's seat and the variable boot floor and have decided they weren't worth the expense, so have not added them to my L&K that's now on order. In retrospect, I consider that I wasted some £750 on those two accessories: but I still think the £200 or so for the RRP, although never yet put to the test, was cheap insurance!

I have cracked one of my standard fit central underbody shields with a very low speed rock impact (the rock was hidden in long grass) so they are not "impact resistant". However, if the standard shield hadn't been there, the rock would have gouged the floor of the car, so I'm glad it was there. However the standard fit ones are there primarily to stop small stone impact in normal highway use and to air smooth the car's underside - to help fuel economy.

I have since thought about retro-fitting the sumpshield for added insurance, but haven't got around to it given that I most of my off tarmac stuff is on mown grass - and i normally know what's hiding in it!

But if buying new again, I probably would go for the rough road pack option.

Incidentally, the existing front plastic undershield does gather grass nicely in the tongues at the front. Is the RRP one mounted differently to avoid this?

I think I've made my mind up then - I'll add the RRP to the spec, if only for peace of mind.

The overall worth of the RRP is pretty subjective from reading all the responses but until it's put to the test, I don't think anyone can really say one way or the other if extra reinforcements mean the difference between minor repair or expensive surgery. I'm sure someone will come along in a moment to give us all a first hand experience that proves or disproves the worth of this extra kit.

I suppose it's a case of you pays your money and takes your chances except I'm not much of a chancer...

Had the pack on both of our Yeti's and got sold on the idea by the chap who was driving the Czech demo we went to look at back in 2009. He was involved in rallying in some way and this option fitted to this particular demo was his favourite feature, which he kept pointing out :giggle:

The early ones were steel, or at least mine was but the later version is a tough plastic compound. Most of the time the kit just is there, minding it's own business but occasionally it's been called into action, such as the other day crossing a pile of snow, ice, mud, stones, small tree branches and standing water that had been washed down from a field across the road ahead. After assessing said obstetrical, I decided to give it a go and the Yeti crossed it no bother but I could hear some of the debris hitting the shield underneath and the snapping of twigs etc. much more comforting thought that I had a decent level of protection over the standard noise insulator cover of the diesel or virtually nothing there of the petrol set-up.

Oh as a comparison some time back when I had a Golf 4motion, which admittedly sat on the floor, I ran over some branches in an area of overhanging trees with limited light. These got stuck in the standard plastic sound proof under engine cover and the rear suspension components. If I'd had a RRP this might not have been such a problem.

As some have suggested you probably might never need it but personally I've been glad of it being there and I'm not one for doing much off-roading.

Good common sense backed up with evidence as ever from TP!

I didn't opt for the RRP as I'd run out of wiggle room in my budget (having decided to get the 170 instead of the 140, and adding the extra two year warranty)! It was next on the list of options and might get retrofitted at some point in the future. As others have said it's an extra insurance policy and if you can find room in your budget then go for it.

I can accept that it's more of an insurance policy than anything else and considering the total cost of the car, I can spare an extra £200 to have it.

I have the RRP. It protected my car when I beached the car. Driver error pure and simple. It did not damage the car, but during recovery one of the side RRP panels was damaged. This happened early on in my ownership.

The RRP did its job. Highly recommended.

I thought I'd probably wasted my money getting the RRP for my 1.2 that doesn't go off road, but looking at the amount of muck that hits the foils (not standard when I bought) and remembering the bits of broken "speed cushion" that have tipped up and hit the underside, and the potholed council maintained(?) access road to my garage perhaps it was good insurance. I'll never know what damage might have been caused.

Worth having? Yes, probably, for peace of mind.

I see scottpcs has decided to add the off road stuff and I would agree with his decision 100% for the following reason:

If its within my budget and I have to ask the original question AND it will help protect the soft underbelly of my new Yeti from what might happen then piece of mind would be a yes IMHO. Oh and I do not have it on my Yeti just to add a modicum if confusion (she was a showroom SM :giggle: )

Something's out of tune here, how can fitting plastic underbody protection effect the handling on a YETI?

In any case - this is the Yeti forum - I seriously doubt Octavia drivers are going to read this anyway....

 

I also do not see how the RRP could affect handling in any way shape or form - except with the very slight possibility of a slightly different feel at speed due to the re-shaped underbody.

 

And really?? WHY ALL THE SHOUTING IN CAPITALS???

I have the RRP, as the car came with it. I would have retrofitted it as I drive on rough roads at normal speeds, rather than offroad at 3mph. We have plenty of gravel roads around here... And having seen what a chunk of ice can do if you drive over it on thr motorway (they tend to fall off the wheel wells of lorries and coaches), it's a bit of peace of mind for winter driving too. I also have a 7mm aluminium skid plate on the other car, which has done it's job, as it's a bit bashed and bent. 

None of my previous cars have had it, including our family mobile that we've relied upon for the last 5 years or so - a Skoda Octavia.

It for the last 5 years you have manged the snow up north and the bad roads around Hereford in a Octavia with out a Rough Road Package then ask the question why you would need it on the Yeti which has a higher ground clearance that the Octy?
