Which is the better engine TFSI or TSI?

Featured Replies

Lets get a healthy and clean discussion going on which is the better engine

I know this has been covered before, its just after a long conversation, I just not sure now?

Until today, I thought it was the TSi -

1-as you could get better figures before and after a remap.

2- all the design flaws should have been corrected from the TFSI

3-it has valve-lift

BUT....

Why are the Golf GTi R and scirocco r still using the TFSI engines? plus all the ralley guys keep blowing the TSI?

My mechanic swears down, that the TFSI is a stronger unit (not in the aspect of getting figures bhp etc)

I might be wrong with all this, so show me??????????????

I personaly like the tfsi better and as a tech ive seen more mechanical issues with the tsi unit. But both have issues like anything mechanical things will lbreak.

I find this all alittle confusing tbh, on my engine cover it says TSI but on my paperwork and in the service hand book it says tfsi :wonder:

Ive also read that its the same engine?? that the vag group have slowely started to F from tfsi?

If you have a FL model you have the TSi engine (your engine cover confirns this). Forget the Skoda literature its just never been updated.

Gah now i dont know what im driving lol Whats this FL all about? because ive never had anybody say this to me regarding the car... infact im pretty sure it says my car is a 2.0 tfsi on my insurance paperwork so may need to get this changed :/

"added later" im gunna assume FL stands for face lift? soo heres the car in question

Pre facelift with a TFSI engine

Thank you, heart attack has stopped :D

Are you sure your engine cover doesnt say "FSI" on it? my TFSI does! ;)

TFSI oil level dipstick to front left of engine, TSI to left hand side. 2009 was the year of the change, though some of the pre FL (FL stands for Face Lift - so it looks different) 09 cars had the new engine it seems.

its possible they use the 'older' engine as it has been developed for higher engine output. ring, conrods, pins etc. so why develop a motor (the TSI) when you have something on the shelf that will already do that.

after saying that, I read that the new golf R (mk7) will have a stronger EA888 engine with stronger internals and a larger turbo etc

reading this forum, im seeing more problems with the EA888 than the EA113. doesn't make it a bad motor, and you hear more bad things than good things on forums :)

The TSIs in the Mk7 golfs also lose the chain cam belt.

I knew my TFSI was a better engine :moon:

Still think the facelift looks better :envy:

The TSIs in the Mk7 golfs also lose the chain cam belt.

But of course VAG will deny that there is any issue with the TSi engine using a cam chain and that is is normal product evolution (if true of course).

Not bitter much having once had an argument with VW UK over the plastic window regulator clips, apparently there was nothing wrong with them they just randomly decided to improve the part and completely change the material used.

If there is a debate on here about which is better TFSI or TSI, then remind me not to buy a TSI as my TFSI is a pile of sh*it!

Should I ask??

Mine has been bullet proof so far! (knocking on wood, knocking on wood)

Ill keep it short and just mention the engine bay, air con compressor failure, evap system failure, pcv failure, dv failure, high oil consumption, slight water leak, fuel pressure sensor failure, fuel cam follower failure, and now im dealing with a slight misfire on cylinder. And im sick of being careful not to crack or loose the rubbers on the craply designed engine cover! Apart from that the engine has been great!

Mines been fine for the last 2 & 1/2 years & 30,000miles,no issues (except a warranty repair on the boot electrics) at all & doesnt use that much oil either (1 litre in 10,000miles).

My 57 pre fl 1.8 TSI says TSI on the engine cover, TSI on the back of the car and TSI in my v5c, hopefully I have a TSI ....

hi fellow skodarians : )

i am looking at buying a used skoda octavia vrs 2017 plate - how do i tell if it has a TFSI emgine or the TSI.

cheers

Welcome.

You can be certain that it is a TSI because that is all there is for a 2017 2.0l petrol.

(Unless it happens to be a diesel and then it will be a TDI.)

Hi roottoot,

many thanks for the reply - having had a look around the internet i am reading bad things about the EA888 gen 2 engines ..

how can i make sure i dont get one in the 2017 vrs i am looking at ??

cheers

Best you ask in the Mk3 section because i have no idea what bad Euro 6 TSI's you are reading about.
