I'd like to get this verified one day, never really bothered before, mainly as some people are claiming the Furby vRS speedo is WAY out, in that it's indicating much higher than actual speed, whereas others (you included ;)) claim it's quite accurate.

Main reason I'm keen to find this out is coz I prefer to know when I am doing the speed limit, such that I don't get fined ;) (or alternatively, it will allow me to know exactly what speed I am doing, for 'reference purposes' when I overtake someone, for example  )

Just wondering how you know this/what you're comparing against?? I'm fairly sure my old car was at least 10% fast and would be interested to know how the Fab compares.

I drive down some roads with those cameras that flash up your speed but every time I've been down them since I've had the Fab the system hasn't been working.

im comparing it to the virtual dash on my pioneer avic x1r satnav system :) so really no more acurate way to do it except really really expencive timing equipment

Damn, so can't use assumed speedo error as an excuse for speeding then!

I've checked on GPS and it only really gets out as you start going quicker - 3-4mph at 70 sounds about right, but get upto 100 and it's nearly 10mph off. 118 in real life indicates just over 130 on the clock - I guess if the car were loads quicker the gap would widen.

Legally they've gotta be within -0%+10%

steve from what i could see mine wasnt that far out !!

Mine seems to be a constant 10% out over the whole range, up to about 80mph..

What do you need expensive timing equipment for?

A stopwatch and a couple of fixed points like the quarter mile markers that the police use (white squares in the road) will do the trick. Having cruise so you can maintain a fixed speed is handy

Most cars I've tested seem pretty similar - a mechanical speedo has a margin of error that becomes more apparent as the speed increases.

What's interesting is that the car's mileage is calculated in the same way, so the faster you drive, the falser the mileage - I calculated that by 100k I'll be out by over 5k!

im sorry but keeping a car doing a constant speed is almost impossible. atleast with gps you get your speed at that second

...worked out by measuring the time taken to traverse two points... :D

yes but thats done by a super dooper fast compooooter not by mr dopey and his slow reflexes on his stop watch lol

ps not calling mr z dopey lol

Against my Navman GPS the Fabia reads 1 or 2mph over at 30mph and around 3mph at 70mph.

The Octavia is a bit more out, about 3mph over at 30 and 5mph over at 70-80mph.

Cheers

Which is sending signals to and from something the size of a house orbiting the earth's atmosphere... :D

I can guarantee the speedo on the Fabia is dead accurate. Our radars are set to flash if you exceed 120kmph. Most of the time I pass thru at 120, max speed limit, no flash, decent run...once I hit just above that speed limit, I'm thinkin' about 1kmph...*FLASH!*...it hit me.

did you know if they wanted too the american goverment could just stop us using satnav !! we use the american military satlights for satnav and they can shut it down with no warning if they feel like it

How come when the Speedo on my Furbie vRS says 70mph. My GPS say's 67mph?

There is something wrong with your GPS then. Manufacturers can be liable to face court charges if their products are not up to par in quality. Why the hell would they manufacture a car disregarding the accuracy of the speedometer??

Try race against your radar...go at the max speed limit, and then cross it a little, see what you get. I highly doubt there is somethign wrong with your speedo, it's your GPS that's the problem.

True - that said the US govt would probably not shut it down for quite some time to come. Actually, the 'freely accessible accuracy' has gone up significantly since the US govt allowed access - originally it was 100 meters, now it's a LOT more precise ;)

Because (at least in this country), the speedo is not allowed to under-read. Therefore, most manufacturers will calibrate the speedo to over-read slightly, as the device is legally allowed a 10% over-read...

Well they could turn it off , but then how will their soldiers know where to drop the bombs?
