Clutch Problems when Stationary

Featured Replies

I've got a strange problem developing slowly with my Fabia VRS;

I'll come to a stop at a junction or traffic lights then engage first gear with the clutch fully down to the floor, there's then a small jerk and the car will start creeping forward like the clutch is on biting point. I have a suspicion that the slave cylinder is faulty but why would that be intermittent? It can't be doing the clutch or DMF any favours and the problem is progressively getting worse.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Are you losing fluid

  • Author

Nope, fluid is spot on.. If I am it's a very small amount.

Are you losing engine oil?

  • Author

No, that's fine too.

First (and cheapest) thing to try is to bleed the brakes and clutch.

You might be lucky and there be some air trapped in there.

If that doesn't work then it is likely the master or slave cylinder.

Thanks for the reply Phil, I've bled the system twice and reverse bled it as well all to no avail. I'm also having problems with 'clutch drag' as well so from searching the forum I've narrowed it down to the slave cylinder, I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem??

Simmo has! He had the slave cylinder changed and all was back to normal. Have read this in here a few times now.

How many miles has the clutch done?

SN

As Dan says its the slave cylinder/ release bearing

Thanks for the confirmation guys, looks like my Sunday is booked.

Yep it seemed to be the slave!

Had that changed and is much better... Still bites low sometimes but I think that could be the type of clutch

Could be a bit of air getting in somewhere too

Well it's only £35 for the Sachs slave, glad it's not the DMF although I'll check it when it's out

Thanks again!

But doesn't it require the gearbox to be removed to fit?

Yep, not a 5 minute job.

Any ideas on how long this job took?  My VRS is a b*gger when cold and damp - i.e. every morning.  It squeals when lifting the clutch in 1st or 2nd for the first few miles and is also moving forward slightly sometimes in first with the clutch fully down.

More frustratingly, I can't engage 1st until completely stationary.  If i do (clutch to the floor) then it sounds horrific and fights it so I have to be absolutely still.  Again, when warm it'll drive fine.

Is this the slave cylinder/ release bearing or something much worse?

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but this seemed to relate most closely to my problems.

Thanks in advance... :)

i would imagine yours ^^ wants a dmf and slave cyl

Thanks Holmesie,

I sort of expected the worse.  It is on 134K.  Better get saving... And finding somewhere in Berkshire/Buckinghamshire who's reputable.

Thanks

How close to Wokingham are you mate?

give Clive @ CNTuning a shout. Top bloke and now knows how to do a fabia clutch after we did mine during the night a few months back lol

About 10 miles!  i'll deffo get him to quote me.  Cheers!

Reads like a knackered clutch and/or wear on the gearbox to me. Is there (enough) oil in the gearbox? Has it ever been checked/changed?

Gearbox has never been checked.  Engages all other gears absolutely fine, very very smooth for 134K.  If oil was low, would expect it to affect all gear changes?  I've read about a selector being 'out' or perhaps the linkage for 1st is worn too?

Dave89 a few months ago i had the same issues as you apart from the squealing. Mine turned out to be a flywheel that had was siezed solid and wasnt floating but was still able to push back into itself when clutch was engaged. I replaced the dmf and clutch and slave and now everything is 100%. It got that bad i couldnt get the car into or out of 1st gear or reverse. Hope this helps

Thanks ^ sounds identical going to get the work done in Jan.
