Old versus new; Golf GTI mk2 8v v's Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

no.... sensible does not mean driving slow you know. it's about balancing safety of yourself, family and friends; your wallet, comfort and driving fun.....THE FABIA VRS.

I was going to buy a clio 182 but it cost far too much for what it is, depreciates too much, costs alot to insure, costs alot to tax, bad economy even when driven "sensibly", bone breaking ride and in-ability to hold 4 people in comfort.

Don't get me wrong i could easily afford a 182, but laying all the money out just to be able to go from 0 - 60 a little bit qicker and a bit faster round bends. Incidently never happens in an average persons day to day driving.

Back to the review...how any one would want to have the Golf over any new car beats me...? The Fabia is different class.

Well, I have not had any accidents in the last 8 years of driving, but I do like to push on. I'm not saying I'll never have an accident but touch wood.

Have you actually driven one? Costs far too much? Mine, with 5000 miles on the clock was

God yes ^^^^ I'd buy that for a dollar.

Well I'm off to the pub for a bit. See you's later! :D

yeah the fabia is in a different class, but not "different class" as you put is:rolleyes: its a diesel "warm/hot hatch" of the 2004+ year. the golf was a Hot hatch of the 1980-90's. so really not comparable.

but by your quote, i would have a mk2 Gti over a fabia vRS anyday £12.5k of my money? Golf G60/GTi thank you very much :D

wow she is hot.:orb_flami

hey what is really good when i drive the fab VRS is that it will give me a good thrill and i nice big smile on my face :D aswell as me having a great bank balance at the end of the month which. (Certainly makes up for the thrills lost from not having the Clio 182)

is it not embarrasing when the GTI breaks down?

you forgot to include the high risk of breaking down when driven fast!

remember the storey about the tortoise and the hair?

well to be honest this review is more like an elderly hair (well worn mk2 gti) vs a young ostrich (Fabia VRS) the ostrich is very underestimated but can keep up or even beat the hair as it's soo old and decreppid.

ill get me coat but you get the jist!

the 182 doesn't have leather seats at all just bits here and there. The options on the Fabia are v.cheap. the brand spanker VRS I am getting has Pearlescent paint, Xenons, heated seats, cruise control and ESP for just 12K the equivalent 182 would cost me around the same price and doesn't even come close to build quality, depreciates alot faster, has alot of common faults and is a 2+2 in real life.

the clio deosn't have heated seats does it?

And yes I have driven both 182 and fabia VRS

i owned my mk2 for 5 years and not once did it break down :) and the 2 years ownership of our fabia was worse than any of the 2 out 5 years with the golf as far as problems etc

not too sure your standard vRS would fair aswell as you think against a mk2 ;)

just remember' date=' he's going from a 1.2 Clio to a Fabia vRS...

why is it whenever [i']anybody[/i] says anything other than how great the Fabia vRS is, you get people jumping on you for "bashing" the damn thing, and then quoting mpg and 37.234mph - 53.764mph in 5th at an incline of 12.543% times...

maybe cause they are critisising other cars at the same time? ;)

Christ this is dull. Anyway my TPW:

chris_newell41, judging by your sig you have just shelled out a wodge of cash on a brand new fabia vRS. Well done I'm pleased for you. However you can't seem to accept that people have different opinions on the car and it might not be the 'best thing since sliced bread'.

If a member wants to post a review on the comparison of 2 particular cars he has owned no matter how 'different ' you or anyone else may think they are then that's upto them. Get over it.

what he said;)

lol i am over it....was i ever under it?

in my defence i never said his review was wrong. i just said i didn't agree. i also highlighted OPINION many times to state the fact it was actually an opinion.

like you say i have put my money in my basket and handed it over. it is very natural to defend somethig you think highly of.

i also said the review was not fair. what i wasn't happy about was that he convinced someone else not to buy a Fabia VRS. why not? it's a very safe bet.

i love these forums they make me laugh

safe bet that has gone back to the dealer over 20 times in 2 years

i care not.

i work next to skoda dealer

3 year warranty DOH!

why thank you for caring

being honest i hope you enjoy your car, they are good and if it werent for the continuing problems we would be keeping ours

enjoy your car

Just to throw my TPW in, for what its worth (Two pence i suppose) I currently own both a golf GTi albeit a MK1 and a fabia vRS, both fairly well modified and i agree with the initial review by Paul, and the couple of bits i maybe don

woo hoo. nice comment. im liking it. variety makes the world what it is.

I just thought. the fabia fits in with my life perfectly. it does exactly what i want. doesn't say it won't fir in with anyone elses life style. same as the clio 182 and golf gti that have made appearances in this thread. we all love our cars.

good work guys nice to chat to you.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what any one person thinks about a car - it's what you think of it as the potential owner that matters! Just about everybody who has ever bought a car bought it because it suited them, financially, performance, comfort or whatever.

BTW, good review Paul. :) Always liked the old Golfs though I didn't realise their reliablity was that patchy!

I think to be fair, we established that mine was a bad'un. Plenty have had Mk2 and have had no problems whatsoever...

I always heard the 8v was pretty much bomb proof. The 16v being a bit more fragile, but still a reliable engine!

yeah my 8v was running 170k miles still going strong, still is 3 years later with a new owner

They are. However, the newest version is now at least 14 years old and they do require more regular maintenance. If your handy with a spanner then they are cheap and simple to maintain.

I think in hindsight Paul didn't buy one of the better ones and I also think by his own admission he's not too confident messing about with the oily bits himself which is when things get costly running an older motor if you have to rely on a garage etc.....

not too sure about the comments, tho i agree on somethings, as i used to drive a mkII golf gti, and now drive a furbie vRS. i love them both equally but in different ways, if that sounds right.

good post tho.

  • 3 weeks later...

I sold my 16v mk2 Golf and bought a new Vrs in march 2005 and initially absolutely loved the comfort, instant torque and much improved mpg of the fabia,I wanted a car that I did'nt have to spend loads of time with spanners in my hand, not that the golf was unreliable, but a 14 yr old car needs its fair share of maintenance.

Now 10 months later I am not so sure about the skoda,I still like the comfort and mpg,I miss the handling of the golf and the skoda creaks and rattles as much as the golf now which is not very confidence inspiring.

To sum up ,I think that most cars are a compromise, drive a honda ctr for a few months and you will relish the skoda and vice versa,i think we all need to own two cars!!!
