Pikey Mod Mark II, well sort of....

Featured Replies

Got bored so looked down at my puny SMIC today and decided "what the hell, i'll take off the front fog light and see if it makes a difference".

It certainly seemed to pull stronger, so I started to think "how can I keep the look of the front fog lights and still get this extra pep" and then it hit me :hooray:.

Cut away the plastic surround! So using my trust hacksaw I carefully cut away the plastic (obviously used as a strenghener but serves no other purpose) and low and behold, my new improved intercooler intake pikey mod sort of thing :D

Again could be a placebo effect but it does seem to breath a little better!

How about taking the fog light out as well? Thinking on doing this for brunters.

Looks good.

Have you done Pikey Mod Mk I? If not I don't imagine the Mk II is going to have much effect as the air is still going into the dead space behind the wheel arch liner...

Yes done mark I, I did notice when I removed the fog light surround that there is some plastic behind it which seems to divert some of the air to the intercooler and some air into a circular tube , I did think about cutting away a bit of the plastic as it seems like it only diverts a bit of it towards the intercooler, if it were cut you would certainly notice a gain as the intercooler would be exposed directly to the vent I have made at the front.

You could also cut away the grille between the foglight and the outside of the trim, as shown below.

Sounds good Bryan, certainly something I was considering, however im unsure that my DIY skills stretch that far  I wouldnt want to slip with the hack saw and leave an untidy finish.

P.S. It does look very good!

You're brave chaps! Can't imagine taking a hacksaw to my Furby!

well after a spirited drive I can 110% confirm this mod does seem to make the car rev much easier, it seems to fly up the needle, definately not a placebo effect, I believe it is aided by the pikey mod 1 however (tt vents for those not in the know...)

I'll stick to pikey mod 1 at the mo. This weekend my car really did suffer in the heat. Had power loss and lots of smoke  Friday was the worst day after gettin stuck on the good old M25 for 2 hours *sighs*

Lets just hope you dont get a stone fly up through there now.

This is the reason I didn't do this mod!

Roll on winter... Or wait til I win the lottery. FMIC here we come...

would that be for mod 1 or 2.

Knowing my luck it would happen to me

Just mod 2 really. Unless you wheelspin on gravel in reverse

its very unlikely to hapen though, and why would an fmic be less prone to stones

either way I still stand by my statement.

As I've already smashed a front fog light stones do hit that area but as bengie said it's probably less likely to happen than one hitting a FMIC

Really? You should have seen the amount of stonechips on my old fog light cover then, and how many people have had broken vRS fog lights due to stones?

As you can get headlight covers, can you get foglight covers? In particular for my Comfort's square fogs. Or would I need to get some made up?

Nowt off the shelf.

How about fitting some mesh, ideally something which allows plenty of air through of course as otherwise it wouldnt help a great deal

Just thinking along the lines of larger area to hit so more chance of it. Though as I've said I've smash one fog light already, so unless the mod makes a major difference I wont be cutting bits off.

Skoda probably put them there for a reason

Yep I have a cracked fog light and I travel on nothing but pretty clear roads (i.e not gravel roads etc)

So doubt i'll be doing this

Not had anything broken (touch wood) so far - will probably do Pikey I though at some stage, possibly in the near future, as although my car is standard I've seen a fair few smoky diesels and I must admit, if I can avoid it mine won't be one of them :)

Ive not had a look and its raining outside so forgive me if its impossible, but instead of removing a fog light, could you not just plumb a pipe from say the lower grill to the i/c or something to give it additional air?

You can get some of the mesh that is used for repairing big rust holes about

There are many terms that could be classed as offensive to some. I'm sure I've used several of those terms on a regular basis, not intending to be offensive in some cases :D

Good tip that delroy - might drop into my 'local' DIY store, drilling holes & putting on some mesh is something I can manage
