tablet or lap top?

Featured Replies

Windows 8 works well on a tablet or touchscreen.

Other half just bought a Microsoft Surface.

Can be got pretty resonably on ebay.

Still much cheaper than a ipad and about the same as geting a laptop but with the added advantage of it being a tablet too.

Nice little device and the little that I have got to use it I really like it and wouldn't mind one myself.

Thanks all, much appreciated :)

@aspman, the very helpful lad in Currys yesterday was showing me the BB Playbook, I thought it was good for what it was but preferred the Nexus and Galaxy.

@Gizmo, yes I have a PC too

My mind is now made up on a tablet but the Nexus7, the Nexus10 (getting a bit pricey) or Galaxy Tab 2 is the question. Are CPW OK to buy from as they're doing the Galaxy for £238 although it's only running ICS?

At that price I stick to the nexus personally

I picked up a Ployer Momo 11 Bird (think ipad look-a-like running Android ICS) through Amazon at Christmas for £140 or so and SWMBO has ahrdly put it down since. She uses it for general surfing and stuff like food orders as well as for the Biology tutoring she does. Cracking piece of kit at a fraction of the cost of an ipad and much more adaptable. In fact I'm tempted to dump my netbooks for one as well...

Cheers skomaz, I'll have a look at the 'Ployer Momo 11 Bird'

dancingbear84, thanks and just as an aside I went to get an Archos 80 cobalt when I got a HOTUKdeals alert about them being in Tesco for £50 or £60 on New years day I think it was, unfortunately by the time I got to the nearest 3 Tesco stores they'd all gone and last time I looked they're about £110 :wall:

Since I missed out on the Archos I've done my usual trick of looking at more and more expensive options when it probably isn't necessary.

I got lucky, my father in law went to get one for himself and got me one too. I couldn't justify the price of a nexus given all the other tech i own, but 50 quid was too good to be true.

I would stick to a nexus though unless there are any more 'silly deals' like the archos or the HP touchpad fire sale.

The level of support for unbranded tablets such as the momo is likely to be lacking. The support for branded is bad enough, Samsung HTC and others drag their heels with updates. I've been waiting almost a year for my s2 to get the jellybean update. If the speed of updates doesn't bother you though you can save money by going unbranded.

If it were my money I'd buy a nexus over anything else, unless the price was under 80 and the specs were good.

My s2 is still on Gingerbread, make of that what you will :D

Actually support for the Momo is (or was) pretty good - through GTR Electronics, the official UK importer, via the Amazon Forums or direct to Gary himself via the website and email. It was one of the reasons I went for the Momo. That and the fact that there was a 'clean' non-chinese firmware for it that was available for download from his website (although I have to say I have yet to bother installing it). The Momo 11 Bird is getting a bit old hat now compared to some of their newer stuff that he is hoping to stock but it still works fine for us and has received consistently good reviews across a variety of Android forums (apart from some early wifi issues).
