Thread resurrection...

Does anyone use one of these type things?

I'm looking at the scangauge II (eBay 201493808766) or turbogauge IV (eBay 301796041654)

Do they converse well with VAG cars?

I'm thinking of mounting it on the steering cowl, as an alternative to 2" gauges under the radio, up the pillars, hanging out of vents etc... and all the plumbing that goes with them.. the gauge mode on the turbo gauge seems to tick off the important ones, oil pressure, boost, AFR etc.. it claims to calculate power aswell, although how accurately it does this is open to question!

Thoughts, suggestions and alternatives welcome, I've seem the newer versions with HUD but I think its a bit gimmicky and don't seem to offer the gauge side of things. I'm leaning toward the turbogauge based on price, and the ease of swapping in out quickly should I need a dtc reader for a mates car, or a bit of troubleshooting.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm interested in what you find, as I've been driving round with my "other car" ** with all sorts of obd2 testers and loggers attached and thnk the whole thing is a can of worms.

The video at

about the VAG trick is way too long, but is quite interesting in parts, especially as it seems that you can't trust some of the data that comes out of obd2 ports - for example the rev counter takes various inputs and outputs a value that relates to engine speed but isn't it (if I've understood it correctly).

**Jeep Grand Cherokee which has a very non-standard obd2 setup.

I think its the same with anything really... like when the clocks change - which clock to trust, phone may have updated itself? same with the pc..? the one in the kitchen from poundland? you usually go out to the car, knowing it will be an hour (and 10 mins) out... then its google time to work out which way they have gone, and make the necessary adjustments (I hate that time of year! lol)

I think it would be helpful to see what the car is seeing, rather than a collection of generic gauges, all the variables associated with methods of connection, signal wire interference etc etc... plus its a lot easier, and less fast and furious looking...

youtube shows one in an ibiza cupra..

but the only other online info are sales sites who say it will work fine with anything!

turbogauge IV user manual PDF here

If it does what it says it does, great... but i've bought chinese electrical products before.... best quality, brightest light, longest lasting and so on.... a month later a jiffy bag full of disappointment arrives..

Billaboard, I spotted the discovery listed in you're cars...

I had a TD5 and instantly thought back to the days of plugging it in every week to see what it was unhappy with this time! (usually the 3 amigos because a wheel got wet)

...but a jeep, well, I don't think any plug in device will give you a better diagnosis than your gut on that one! :D

I'd better alter my listing of cars, as the Discovery was a write off after my local garage sent a spark through one of the holes in the floor while welding it up for its last MOT. It still drove fine, but the windows were all black and you couldn't really sit in it.

It was a 300tdi, and I couldn't find a replacement worth buying at a price I could afford. I was warned against td5's and decent ones were also out of budget. Son knew of this Jeep, which had been bought as a stop-gap while the owner was waiting for his Skoda Superb to be delivered. It had been fine when he drove it 6 months earlier but had sat unused and unloved under trees. So far with me it has had 2 wheel bearings, new track rod end, and a host of other parts, but purchase + work has brought it up to under half the price of a decent Disco of the same age and, if I can get the rest done, it will tow my 3+ ton boat. It drives a bit like a boat.

It has Merc engine and gearbox mixed up with Chrysler electrics and almost all the diagnostics info on the 'net refers to the very different US version, but some man in Estonia has written a simple diagnostic program for the PC that works well with my bluetooth (£2.50 from Hong Kong) senders.

It was a bad December because I had to replace the Disco and my 2006 Octavia would have cost £1800 to pass its MOT, so we now have a 2010 very similar 1.9tdi estate and we are living hand to mouth until the January pension arrives.

I've had 200tdi disco, a 90 and a much loved, rebuilt from chassis 200tdi 90.. which I was told "wasn't really a family car".. so I sold it to buy the disco TD5 - not a good one. divorced within 6 months, I really miss my 90

Hope the new year picks up for you soon

I think this topic might be better dropped into the technology section as a fresh post?
