Parking brake

Featured Replies

Ever since I've owned my Superb (three years) the parking brake sticks a little after being parked overnight in the garage. Sometimes it jerks off when reverse is engaged and sometimes it holds on for a second or two longer with an audible grunt from beneath the car. My local dealer has failed numerous times to solve the issue and always blames humidity for the "sticking" problem. I have never experienced a similar problem on a variety of cars and I've lived in a humid climate most of my life.

Any ideas? Probably doesn't happen too much in snowy climes!!

I get this effect after being parked for a day or two, I think it's caused by the resin they use to fuse the brake disc pad material together.

the same happens to clutches if a car is left for a long time unused (months).

some brake pads/clutches (and shoes) suffer from it, some don't.

can you leave the hand brake off and park in gear?

Because of the annoying "sticking" issue, I have developed the habit of not using the parking brake as suggested by "Alanbathurst" and that is not an issue in my garage but sometimes a bit chancy around the country side. This is not really an acceptable solution though really. My dealer shrugs when I complain. Seems Skoda dealers around the world conduct seminars on how best to push away from problems!! It is a great car but would be a world beater if these little quirks were handled with a little t.l.c.

if you never use the hand brake it will rust solid in time .

I was always taught to clean the handbrake pads every now and then, by pulling the handbrake gently whilst travelling at a very low speed to bring the car to a standstill.

Other thing to watch out for is applying the handbrake when your brake discs are hot, as you can slightly warp the discs because they are unable to cool evenly over their surface with the parking brake on. Shouldn't be an issue in normal use though, unless you've had a lot of hard braking before you park up.

Happens to mine if i wash the car and leave it, its really common on lots of cars , you could try gently lifting the handbrake when driving slowly just to engage the pads and clean the surfaces
