Power steering

Featured Replies

Hi I'm completely new to this forum and I'm hoping that you can help me in some way. I know that this topic has been covered already but I don't this particular problem has been mentioned.

My car was fine on Saturday when I drove home apart from the steering light being on but it's been like that for a couple of years and I've managed to live with it.

This morning however when I went to drive to work I found that the power steering had completely given up. I checked the fuse and found that the 5a in the fuse box had blown so I replaced it and tried again but still no power steering. I also read somewhere that there is a 50A fuse in the compartment above the battery. I checked that and there are 4 fuses there but no 50A he largest is a 40A and all 4 are ok.

Any idea from you guys would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Check the power at the pump connector with a multimeter, if it's not getting power then work backwards. If it is getting power then suspect the pump. It's also possible the angle sensor or battery may be faulty (do your dash/headlights lights dim/flicker?) but normally it'll cause the pump to kick in/out as if the wheel has been fractionally moved left/right continually.

The lights on the dash stopped flickering a long time ago. Just got a solid light on now but it's been like that for a couple of years. The battery is only about 6 months old. I do suspect the pump but I'd like to know what caused the fuse to blow.

I have a selection of spare steering parts availble after i bought steering angle sensors and pumps trying to get to the bottom of my steering problem so if you figure out what it is give me a shout and i might have the part going cheap.

Turns out mine was the cable between the sensor and the pump. I got a solid steering light, emergency mode steering but a steering angle sensor fault on VAGCom.
