New Yeti - heater problem?

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a new Yeti Urban in white after 'down grading' from a Volvo XC90. I struggled to find a car that I enjoyed driving after the XC90 but the Yeti ticks all the boxes for us and we find it great to drive, so definately not a 'downgrade'. The car has done 2000 miles and on 3 occasions when I have got out of the car I have noticed the fan still running and a strong smell of burning at the rear of the car. I thought this might be the DPF regeneration occuring but called my local garage and booked it in for a check anyway. They found no fault with the DPF but did have a fault come up on the heating system. The mechanic was a little vauge and it sounded as though he was saying the 'fault' could be from one of the vents being stuck.

They now want to book the car in for a dashboard removal to fix the vent! My dilema is do I let them do this work or not, bearing in mind I have not noticed any problem with the heating. Had I not gone in about the DPF I would be none the wiser about a heating fault. I just keep thinking 'squeaky dash' now as it will never go back as good as it was installed in the factory.

Also is 3 DPF regens in 2000 miles excessive? I know it depends on driving etc. but I have a VW Transporter van with 2.0ltr diesel engine and have never noticed this doing a regen, and I drive that similarly.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

What you have experienced is just the DPF regenerating (and that does not turn on any lights, codes etc.). If your heating works well, do not let them take the car in pieces. What code did it show?! It has happened before, that a garage do not have a clue about what they are doing...

Isn't the "running on" of the fan, when engine switched off after a run, just a precautionary measure to cool the engine. The electric fan is controlled by a thermostat and unlike old fan belt driven fans, is not dependent on a running engine. For what it's worth, I too have a (white) Urban and I also find the heater (into footwells) next to useless. My advise - leave well alone.

My Superb does only run the fans after engine is off, if it was doing a DPF-regen.

Mine does this (fans going flat out and noticeable heat at the back) every time a DPF regen is interrupted. I seem to time things so this happens most weeks at one point or another. I've never had the light come on, and I do the odd longer trip that keeps it happy enough otherwise. It happened for the first time on the run to work this morning, after dropping the kids at school. Unusually the roads were pretty much clear the whole route so I wasn't limited to the usual 45mph of the car in front. Oil temp hit 99C just as I pulled into the car park. I'm just off 8000 miles and nothing indicates it's a problem so far.

I can't find a problem with the heater. Turn it up and down and all works. Switch from screen, to footwells etc and all appears ok. I am due to see the mechanic next week to further question him as he sounded like he didn't know what he was really on about. He seemed to be suggesting that the fault diagnostics 'stops' when it found the fault code and that needs to be fixed before they can progress with any further investigation. But they won't be going any where near it unless he can really convince me there is an issue.

Why not have the garage clear the fault --then leave it for a while--like the next service if the heating seems to be OK.

They can always check at that time to see if the fault reoccurs--it might be a flap which was a bit sticky which has now freed itself up

As for the running on I would say it's a regen of the DPF --had it myself when the engine temp was not enough to cause the fans to run on due to high engine temperature-- giving me a head scratching time for a while till I figured it out.

IMHO there should be a little plastic card with the handbook just to warn you of the vagaries of the DPF. The whole thing is really a PITA [personal opinion]! but that is a separate and well documented issue on here [i mentioned f*g lights once but I think I got away with it] :hi:

My 110 SE also does this, drive 12 miles from home to local(!) supermarket over country roads and it does it when we park. OK when shopping is done after about 1 hour. Also RPM is 1k instead of normal 800. Only noticed this since low ambient temperatures.

Sounds like you have had an interupted DPF regeneration, so nothing to worry about.

Unless your VW van has exactly the same engine, then comparison between the two is unfair.

Personally I'd ignore what the "mechanic" said and leave it alone at the moment.

Wasn't the dealer in H'afordwest was it? There are some interesting reviews about them in the Dealers section on here!

I'm I do not want to judge what the current 'Dealer' mechanic said but 20 years or so ago an old acquaintance who was in the 'trade' used to file warranty work all over the place to get paid even when there were no problems.

On another note although it was not a Yeti I had the dash out of my old Mondeo to replace a bulb with zero rattles after. I also had a door card removed by a dealer on my last Seat Ibiza that was removed to fix an internal cable rattle without a problem. I was very concerned about having trim removed and refitted and end up with a bigger problem but the end result was very good. Oh, and I'm not in the trade before anyone asks. If it works OK then I'd not get it 'fixed'.

Hi Natcho,

Nice to see another Yeti owner on here in Pembrokeshire!

I occasionally get a smell from the heater. It smells a bit of of cooking food.

It doesnt smell like any food that i cook, but there we are.

Hope to see you on the road sometime!

Hi Mike, I passed a red one tonight on the Cleddau bridge but will look out for you!

Thanks for that. Best I have a good read in the dealer section then!

Natcho, I live out in the country north west of Haverfordwest. So the car is usually a dirty silver colour. Not the brilliant metallic silver that Skoda offer!

When I moved here I had a white Merc SLK. It was clean when I left the house but by the time I got 200m down the road it was sh+*brown :giggle:

I love the Yeti in White  good choice!

Graham has recommended Sinclairs Swansea to me too. I was going to take Gwladus there to fix the dash rattle and tie it in with a hospital; appointment.

Sinclairs couldnt have been more helpful with the offer of a courtesy car and or a lift.

However the hospital cancelled the appointment, so I cancelled the visit to get the rattle fixed.

So I'm waiting for my first variable service to come up in a month or so's time and then who will I take it to?

I would be pretty sure the DTC is referring to the ‘circulation’ flap momentarily sticking (for a fraction of a second) but otherwise is working perfectly, a common fault that is present in probably 50% of the cars I have scanned (I have done ‘quite a few’) my advise is what I advise everyone with thar DTC… ignore it.

That rings a bell, I think he did say somehting about the recirculation? I have since spoke to Sinclair Skoda and they said if it isn't bothering me just leave it. When it has it's first service they will see if the fault code is still up and take it from there. Cheers for the advice guys.

Pretty much every vag car throws the recirc flap fault at some point or another.

As long as the flaps working I wouldn't be taking the dash out to fix anything

My Yeti is having Heater issues which "I" would like to fix. I have little faith in the dealer which is a 40 mile plus round trip since they took a fortnight to fix a boot light switch.

I have the dual control heater and noticed the drivers side goes cool and in the end is on full heat just to get some that side. The passenger side seems to be going the same way. I'm sure it isnt blocked filters or pipes.

The Engine temp and all that jazz are working properly. Its just the countless electricals that have started to die.

Can these sensors or whatever be bought ? from where? Much rather lay in the footwell for a weekend than have to take it to never never land again.

Thanks

Had similar probs, the thermocouple controlling the air directiion flaps on the drivers side had failed, needed replacing , a dealer job unfortunately!
