Another MOT for the Felicia

Featured Replies

I couldn't resist sharing. Much to my delight, my X-reg (2000) Felicia 1.9D passed its MOT again yesterday.

The mileage -194,482 and still going strong!

It's the best wee car I ever had. The DVA runs the test centres here and even the MOT inspector seemed impressed.

 Hope mine does the same on Monday? ;)

Longevity doesn't seem to be any issue for these cars as long as you can keep on top of the rust it seems. Everything else is wear and tear, i.e. all the parts you can still get on the cheap from a motor factors. You'd be surprised how many pieces of trim the dealer can still source too.

Yes the rear arches weren't great, but I got them sorted out last year.

All the best for Monday Robk1. Let us know how she fares.

I'm dreading getting mine mot'd....they seem to rust everywhere these cars.

all depends if you wash them regularly

Thanks Call me Ishmael, I've got everything crossed! :smirk:

Doesn't seem to make much difference to my rear turrets!! Top 1/3rd of near side one in primer again :o

What pollution taxes do you pay in UK for Felicia?

What pollution taxes do you pay in UK for Felicia?

In the UK, cars registered before MArch 1st 2001 are taxed according to engine size, i.e over under 1549cc and over 1549cc as follows:

For 6 months: £121-00 (1.6, 1.9D)/£74-25(1.3) ------- 586/361 Zloty

For 12 months: £220 (1.6, 1.9D)/£135-00(1.3) ------- 1066/654 Zloty

Cars registered after that date go by emissions.

Had anyone something to say about those cars being SOLD TO PEOPLE AS 'POLLUTING' AS THEY ARE by the car manufacturers? I mean not the consumer had the intention of polluting. On the contrary, majority of people do their best to keep them in pristine condition. Nobody wants high emissions, because that means higher consumption hence a bigger hole in the pocket. I bet there are Felicia cars looking and running better than many 5 years old cars...

I know it's a rhetorical question, but don't you have the feeling of being ripped off? Not to mention the government is doing their best to suppress any alternative to fossil fuels... Even the vaseline they are giving us before pulling our pants down and bending over :moon: is made from oil...

You bet. It's like you buy a car with high emissions and the government are all like ' Ooh, dear, dear... you've gone and bought a very dirty car there. Silly you, we'll have to extort you with tax for that' they say as you grind your teeth to dust.

Thing is, they charge me and everybody else an unreasonable amount of tax for our old bangers, when none of the Felicia engines (at least the ones with CATs) were ever (and still aren't) particularly dirty at all.

It doesn't matter what I drive, if I pay through the nose for car tax, there's still going to be as many unfixed potholes to bang into... and then they have the cheek to charge us VAT on the car parts to fix the damage that they indirectly caused in the first place.

A (fairly) busy B-Road which I occasionally use to commute to work is riddled with them. Instead of fixing the hideous and shocking road surface, or rather lack of it, they just leave temporary signs up saying 'uneven road surface'. They've been there for months because it needs resurfacing and well, that just costs to much. Its not like potholes where you can just whack a bit of tarmax/asphalt whatever in there so it came come back twice as bad next year.

Anyway, rant over... well, I still have much to say on this.... I also feel this post could veer wildly off-topic quite soon :giggle:

This country...

This country...

We have a saying in here (perhaps in English too)

"For a scam to succeed, you need a thief and a lazy sucker". Guess what? It's not the country, and we're not the thieves.

More on-topic now, just for a chuckle. A member of this forum from Jordan mentioned their MOT consists in two things: have working brake lights and not leaving a trail of smoke behind... :D

Edited by adurer

Totally true, in Jordan the MOT test is very comprehansive and every test you think of is listed but here MOT people are so lazy they only look at brake lights and look for exhaust smoke when revving up the engine.

Another thing and just before winter they check windshield wipers too

As I said earlier, the MOT centres here in Northern Ireland are run by the DVA (Driver & Vehicle Agency). They're part of the government and are therefore totally independant when it comes to specifying the items which need repaired. The test is quite thorough. They use a rolling road to test the brakes, vibrating plates to test shockers and swivelling plates to test for suspension and ball joint wear. This is in addition to all the visual checks on lights, tyres, rust and suchlike.

It can seem a bit excessive but if she passes all that, you could sell her to your granny with a clear conscience!

They don't test exhaust emissions on diesels. This would involve revving the engine until it screams for mercy or explodes. Surprisingly, not many people want their cars tortured like that.

With a diesel they do a smoke density test.

That's why they should check that your cambelt etx has been done as they do rev it right up and check for excessive smoke.

My Felicia L&K 1.3 failed it's MOT on rust. All the sills had rusted through.

Yup! I also had rust coming through on the tailgate and on the arches. Shame really... LOVED that car to bits (don't mind the pun!) :)

Hi Phil, just how bad were the sills resulting in an MOT failure? I'd be interested to know what the threshold condition is for pass/failure. Cheers ;)

My diesel failed on the wheel arch (among other little things, i.e. CV boots, headlight aim e.t.c). I whacked some gaffa tape on it, took it back in and it passed. I have since removed said gaffa tape as I'm not convinced I'm likely to accidentally amputate any pedestrians with my wheel arch anytime soon.

I was told it was down to where the rust was. Basically it was within a certain distance of the seatbelt mounting point. That's what made it a failure.

I guessed it must have some sort of structural & hence safety link. Thanks for that

Hi Call Me Ishmael, reporting back as promised to confirm she got through today with no issues! Being still on the new year financial recovery curve it came as very welcome news!!:)

Well done Robk1, that's great news! And thanks for letting me (us) know!

It's always a relief to get her through.

Another year's happy motoring, then.
