Removing turbo from VRS - How hard?

Featured Replies

Ok guys, the time has come for me to whip off the old knackered turbo ready for a shiny new one being fitted and I need to know what is involved and how easy/hard it is.

Has anyone removed their turbo? If so what do I need to know?

I don't mind getting my hands dirty but have never ventured into the realms of forced induction engines.

A step by step guide would be awesome, but if not then a rough guide as to what needs to come off/out and in whay order would suffice :p

Cheers

Craig

Hi mate, I don't think it's that hard actually taken the turbo off, we'll you got them old rusty bolts to deal with.. The only trouble I faced was the space is very tight

The right tools and good anti cease spray you should be good

its not hard per say, just fiddly, get some spray on the turbo to mani bolts, the oil lines are fiddly to get to but easy to undo.

I found disconnecting everything from underneath is easiest.

Undo the down pipe

Undo the manifold

Undo oil and water pipes

Remove turbo and waste gate all together

And bring it out.

Replace in the reverse

This is obviously a much shortened version as there are turbo brackets, hoses etc but you get the idea

yup going from underneath is much easier!

Cheers guys. Will I have to bung the oil and water pipes?? This is coming from someone that has never worked on a turbo before.

Take it the oil feed is from the main block?

oil feed is on top of filter at front, oil return is not under pressure even when running so should only drip anyway, that goes into the back of the sump. Just plug em with a bit of rag.

water you may need to bung a bit, return is at the rear, and feed goes round the side as a hard line iirc, don't quote me tho, its been a while...

oil doesnt need bunging (undone from the turbo) and the water pipe can be clamped shut.

If you have never done one before i wouldnt recommend it without some help

Isn't it recommended to change oil feed and return pipes when changing turbo?

Got my mobile mechanic coming to do it this week. You guys scared me out of attempting it! :D

I personally have not done once myself but the guys do make it sound easy (just fiddly) have a chat to your mobile mechanic, ask him if he would 'Like a hand' or if he dosent mind you getting in the way, Most good mechanics are happy to show you what they are doing, i think they enjoy it :giggle:

My mechanic loves it, when i havent done it before, i pay for the first one, give them a hand, ASK LOTS of questions, suggest other ways to do it (sometimes get a bashing for suggesting, Funny) and when it comes to do it again i am more than happy to DIY, aslong as you return the favor with sending work their way they are not as scarey as most noobs make them out

I would just to be on the safe side.

On the diesel (dunno about the petrol), it is quite common to bend the feeder pipe when trying to undo / remove it. That said I have had mine off twice and it has been fine (I have a spare sitting in the garage which has never been used). Will need some new gaskets however.
