Build Week Confirmed... Tax Disc Query

Featured Replies

Just had a call from my dealer confirming the build week of 15 for our new family SM which puts it in the second week of April. My guess is that it'll be at my dealer for, at best, beginning of May unless the build week is moved forward between now and then.

This presents a slight issue where the remaining road tax (or rather lack, thereof) on my part-ex is concerned, which runs out on 31st March.

The standard wording on the terms and conditions of trade-ins from my dealer states that the valuation is based on the vehicle in its entirety, including RFL, audio equipment, extras etc. Thing is, if the new car isn't going to be delivered until May at least then how would I stand in claiming any unused road tax back from the DVLA? Am I to assume that the valuation was based on the remaining road tax at the time?

I could take the part-ex in at the end of March and 'manage' for a month or so whilst we wait for the new car to be delivered, or we can tax the car for 6 months and hope we can claim this back when it's taken into the dealer?

Any thoughts here?

"Managing" for a month might cost a lot more than the 6 months rfl (in cabs etc.) I'd have a chat with the dealer and see what they say.

Hi

I'm in exactly the same position myself having to tax at the end of this month and delivery expected the 1st week of March ,so I explained to the salesman and was told there would be no problem if I retained my tax disc at changeover and I could send back for a refund.

Try approaching your garage you could be in for a pleasent surprise.

Perhaps I should explain a little better when I mean 'manage'.

We have 2 cars, one of which is being traded in for the new car. I also have a motorcycle that I can get about on.

If we took the car being traded in to the dealers when the tax runs out, I'd lend my car to the missus for getting the kids to school and doing her shopping etc whilst I'd use the motorcycle for a month or so.

Just a thought / possible option.

+1 Same happened to me and dealer did the same.

When this happened to me (due to a **** up with Skoda admittedly) the dealer took my px (both tax and mot ran out) and gave me a loaner for 3 weeks

I've never known a dealer claim the tax disc - I have always removed it before I walk into the showroom to complete the change! When my current Yeti was delayed, I also found the dealer willing to take my previous car a couple of weeks early to save having to retax/reinsure it and gave me a loan car. I find that - with a decent dealer - you get what you ask for, given that you are spending a lot of money with them. No good being a retiring violet - you get nothing.

Dealers can no longer claim the tax back, found out this when bought last Octavia. So just dropped trade in off and took tax disc off of the window and claimed the refund from the DVLA. Apparently the rules changed and only refunds can be claimed by the registered keeper. Had no issues getting a refund, just made sure form and disc went off same day as trade in.

When I sold my car to a dealer in December 2012 the price was without road tax disc.

they then came back to me later (after I had agreed to sell) and asked could they purchase the remaining tax from me for the amount I would have got back from the DVLA.

to which i said fine.

So I assume that road tax is not included in valuations.

Hope this helps.

Embarrassingly, I have, in the old days, sold cars for the "tax disc" value plus a £!

I wouldn't have thought that tax was included in the valuation for reasons already mentioned. It does, however, specifically state on the T's and C's that the car in its entirety, including road tax, is included as part of the valuation and must be presented as such come delivery day.

Having said that, the road tax at the time of valuation was only valid until the end of March. This means that I wouldn't have a problem complying with said T's and C's but the tax will have long run out by then. Strictly speaking, a valuation can't be based on something that doesn't yet exist and therefore I should be well within my rights to claim any new tax, bought after the valuation, back when I take the car in.

It sounds from the above though that I'd be best speaking to my dealer.

Just keep the disc. Don't ask questions if you think you may not like the answer.

When I part-ex'd my Octy I was told the tax disc was mine and the dealer handed it over while he was assessing the car. The Yeti took a little longer to arrive than I'd expected so I missed out on a month on the reclaim :(
