Monty or Citygo Sport

Featured Replies

I have a Corrida Red Fabia Sport which will be 3 years old this March. Thinking of changing to either a red monty or the new Citygo sport. Have test driven a Citygo Elegance 75PS. Have to say quite liked it. Test driving a Citygo SE 60PS tomorrow to see what the difference is as the Citygo Sport is now available for order only in 60PS spec. Also, the VAT scheme is still on for the monty! Ummm which deal makes the more sense?

I really like both cars. I think the question is what do you need the car for? Is the space of the Citigo sufficient? Are you looking for economy or performance?

Now I am retired the idea of better petrol consumption and overall lower running costs are appealing. In addition I am usually the only person in the car so may be 60PS Citigo Sport would be a good choice.

As far as i know, you only really notice the difference between the 60ps and 70ps engine if you rev really high.

I'm retired as well. In your shoes, I would go for the Citygo 60PS if you don't need the room of a Fabia. Not sure about the suspension on a sport though - comfort is more important to me these days. By all accounts, the 75PS only comes into its own at high speed. Let us know how you get on with your test drive.

Sounds like it.

Which engine were you looking at in the Fabia?

I know the power come is on the high revs but I thought the final drive ratio was different between the 60 & 75? will that not make a difference in acceleration all be it a little one?

For the small price difference it is easy to use it if you have it, but impossible if you don't?

If you are generally on your own and like low running costs, the Citigo is a cracking car.

I've driven both and unless you are revving it near to the redline there is very little difference in the performance between the 60 and 75 PS versions.

Having had a 75 for three months I'd be happy with a 60 for general pottering about.

Obviously the Fabia Monte is an older design, but due to the discount you are getting a lot for your money.

Close call, so it depends very much on your preferences in my opinion.

I think you'll find th Citigo more fun to drive though, you just have to hold the gears a bit as being natually aspirated you don't have a turbo to rely on to boost the power/torque lower in the rev range..

The suspension on the Citigo Sport will be the same as the regular cars. Anyone with a Greentec car already has sport suspension ;) they just describe it as "lowered 15mm for aerodynamic reasons"... which is true, but it's also a little stiffer and firmer damped. It is not uncomfortable at all.

No final drive difference AFAIK.

Which engine were you looking at in the Monte? If it's either of the TSI's, it'll be quick enough to be great fun. If it's the HTP, buy the Citigo instead unless you need the space.

Are you sure?

The ŠKODA Citigo SPORT is based on the regular ŠKODA Ambition trim line and is available with three and five doors. Below the bonnet of this special model is a 1.0 MPI petrol engine with a choice of 44 kW (60 HP) or 55 kW (75 HP). Fuel consumption in the 44 kW variant with the Green tec package is a mere 4.1 l/ 100 km, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 95 g/km. The transmission can be a five-speed manual or an automated-shift gearbox (ASG).?Mladá Boleslav, January 23rd, 2013 – Effective immediately, the ŠKODA Citigo will be available in racing look as ŠKODA Citigo SPORT special model. This sportily styled subcompact with a lowered chassis impresses with its dynamic chic including racing stripes and comprehensive special equipment such as spoilers and a sports chassis.

  • New ŠKODA Citigo SPORT special model available immediately as both a three- and five-door version with sports chassis and rally stripes
  • Lowered chassis, with alloy wheels, styling kit and sporty interior
  • Dynamic and efficient: ŠKODA Citigo SPORT consumes just 4.1 l/100 km

I think lowered chassis and greentec suspension is the same. Sales talk.

On the Fabia the "Sports Suspension" optional extra and the "Greenline " energy efficient suspension is actually the same thing. :)

Both lower the car around 15mm.

Thanks Richard.

Is the above sales blurb correct by stating that the Citygo sport will have sports/lowered suspension, as Mike states that it will have "the same as the regular cars"? That was the point I was questioning.

Yes, I understand.

But I don't think anyone knows for sure yet, it's just opinion based on the Greenline/sport model Fabias.

We are all working on an educated guess.

The regular Citigo models do have standard suspension while the Greentec models do have lowered suspension.

Just like the Fabia.

So if the Citigo Sport is not a greentec and is lowered with "sports suspension" it'll probably have the same ride height as a Greentec. (IMO!:))

I know the power come is on the high revs but I thought the final drive ratio was different between the 60 & 75? will that not make a difference in acceleration all be it a little one?

There are some curves (estimated from manufacturer data) showing both engine torque and forces at the wheels on this german page: http://www.motor-talk.de/blogs/all-about/vw-up-44-vs-55-kw-radzugkraftvergleich-drehzahl-bei-t3769837.html These curves are based on the 75hp having a different final drive ratio.

If there is any difference in acceleration below ~5000 rpm, it is probably due to that final drive (since the engine torque curves are so similar)?

This added acceleration will come at the (small?) price of somewhat higher revs when cruising, though.

Hi all - not been on the forum for some time as I considered I did not have anything really useful or relevant for you - but I think I have this time!

As confirmed by others here, the Greentech is 15mm lower. I have just checked information I discovered when I bought mine last August and can confirm that my Greentech is fitted with:

'1JC = Rear shock absorption for sports design'

All of the information is contained in code on the inside front page of the Service Schedule book shown alongside 'Special equipment'. It also has:

'L07 = Suspension range 07 installation control only, no requirement forecast' - whatever that means, but could be the other components of a stiffer suspension.

Converting your own codes is quite fascinating and can be done with this on-line converter:

Forgot to add:

'0AG = Front stabilizer'

The Monty I had in mind was the 86bhs. Having read the contributions above the Citigo does look an interesting prospect. I like the idea that the 60ps compares favourably with the 70ps. I am test driving a Greentec 60ps this Friday. Should be fun.

Took a new Citigo black elegance out for a short test drive - a 60PS this time round. Up a hill it seemed to do ok climbing steadily in 3rd gear much the same as my Fabia 1.6 Sport does. The dealer does have a Citigo Sport in Tornado red on its way but I declined to do the deal. They only offered £5540 px for my car based on original cost of £12370 three years ago this March. Obviously VAT plays no part as I recall the OTR cost of c. £13750. At this trade-in price, my car is worth more to me than new (unless I can broker a better deal!).
