Bit premature swapping off the winter wheels/tyres?

Featured Replies

Such a nice day here I am so ready to put alloys back on but wonder if i should wait as it's only mid feb. Might toss a coin lol.

I've been thinking the same, looking at the long term forecast I think I will keep them on though.

Im keeping mine till at least mid march. Still have some snow in the forecast plus temps are below 7 during my commute hours. SWMBO has a damaged summer tyre (found it when changing to winters) so no rush to swap back (replacing the pair on that axle, of course).

Really looking for an excuse not to go to retail park hell. My winters have only touched snow once and that was one day last week. But at the times I'm commuting this week, think I better wait a bit.

It's not just the snow. My winter alloys have got lots of tar spattering and new chips on them, the roads around here are breaking up and the chippings are causing havoc on the wheels. Another 2-3 weeks might see temps rise and give the council time to sweep some of the stones up.

Swapped mine over yesterday early as I am getting a blackline estate on the 1st of March. Would of kept them on for a few more weeks if I wasn't changing cars and also took advantage of the weather yesterday. Already noticed a 3mpg improvement in fuel consumption, and even though the winters have been on since mid October there is still 8mm tread left so very little wear. My only concern for the new car is the crumbling road surface where I live and the effect on the Neptunes?

How many miles have you covered with them on?

Less than 4k, as I do my mileage in the summer months, they are Continentals are were excellent in the couple of times I got to use them in the snow. I am definitely a winter tyre convert and will be leaving the set on the Golf a bit longer. I have had 3 sets of complete wheels and tyres from Mytyres but only buy them in the summer when the prices are lower?

I noticed hardly any wear on my Goodyear ultragrip 8 winters either. Covered 2k with them so not a lot of miles. Looking forward to getting the black neptunes on again. They barely covered 500 miles and were swapped.

..

Swapped mine back yesterday - Fed up with the car looking like a taxi - treated her to a mini detail too (de-tar, Blackhole and EGP).

The old faithful in the background is next for a full valet as she is making way for a Fabia Monte....

Only problem is, i need 3 new tyres which is going to cost around £400 for some SC5's :(

Bear in mind a couple of years ago, we even had snow in April!

I did have the same thought this weekend as I went up to the PistonHeads Sunday Service at Silverstone this weekend but for the last couple of days the temperature around where I am has been a steady 0 degrees with some ice on the roads in places, and now they're saying there are snow flurries forecast for later in the week and temperatures set to plummet again - so definitely still winter tyre conditions!

its Icey/frosty here this morning, I was thinking of changing mine back yesterday, glad I didnt now!

Ditto.

I am itching to get my new wheels fitted and get the neptunes/winters off but I'm glad I haven't done it yet - very icy on the way to work this morning. :-O

I use the clock changing as my rule of thumb for changing.

Looks like we'll have another temp decrease later this week.

I also counteract temptation by using 17" winters that I quite like :D

Still sub zero here in the Peak District, think I'll stick to the winters for a few weeks yet.

As Wardy says, usually base things loosely around the clock change (Including going into short sleeves, lol)

Mine are staying on until the night time temps rise a bit, not in any rush tbh.

Winters stay on my car all year round - it rains too much.

With temperatures set to go down to -10º this week then you must be mad to even think about changing back in February, I would say there is another month or so before it’s time to change.

This is IMO the sensible approach, winter tyres should be the std tyres available, those who want to drive faster can then choose to buy summer tyres, the roads would be clear of people getting stuck and providing you are not driving like a **** on a public road they would not have any impact on road safety.

Last year we had hail in July! (South East England)

Would certainly make sense, but for the general public would probably be seen as a negative/nanny state move! Also that they'd probably end up having to spend more on car tyres than they do at the moment, as it would stop them buying cheap ditchfinders! Always staggered to see the rubbish fitted to most people's cars.

Also, perhaps 'all seasons' would be more appropriate as a year round solution?

Agree with Gizmo - it would save a lot of trouble!

In fact both mine and my wife's cars are on winters. She has a 1.6 diesel and does 3K a year tops - there's just no need to bother swapping :)

Cant wait any longer. Its my day off and time to get hands dirty.!

Back to summers today. Slight issue had the TPM flash up after 5 miles. Reset and waiting for it to come back on. Oh and off-set wheel slightly due to a nudge when parking during snow. Really noticeable with the Zeniths. Time for a visit to tracking specialist.

If the wheel is offset after hitting something, then tracking whilst it may fix the symptoms will not cure the fault. Something has been bent and requires replacing in addition to the alignment.

Its been really cold in Portsmouth today, did not make it above 3c all day long so still just right for winters.
