What happens when the airbag blows?

Featured Replies

I've just had the glove box out to hide some wiring under the dashboard of my Fabia, and was looking at the passenger airbag unit. I was wondering how the bag expands outwards when triggered. It must somehow break through the dashboard, but I couldn't see any obvious joins or weak points where it is designed to split. Has anyone had a passenger airbag go off or seen the result?

This has always worried me about airbags. The driver's one is in the steering wheel which has that lovely round metal Skoda badge in it. I always envisage coming out of an accident with a Skoda logo imprinted in reverse on my forehead!

Don't know the answer to the question, sorry.

Good job it's not a Merc; that's gotta hurt!

Isn't the area of the dashboard in front of the passenger pre-stressed so it comes out in a specific place?

I think the thing about airbags is they're not like falling gently into a feather bed. Being hit by an airbag 'kin hurts - but not as much as being hit by a windscreen!

talking from first hand experence the impact of an air bag is like falling into a feather bed, amounst all the stress and knowelege you are crashing its an overwelming feeling when you head hits an air bag and not something hard...

and as for where the come out you woudl be surpised how small the crack is they emerge from on the dash side it will be a cross shape very very thin plastic but cleverly hidden, on the steering wheel im guessing it will split around the bottom of the badge and out either side of the centre...

BTW not my car first hand experence was in a mazda 626

they make a hell of a bang ang get annoying white dust everywhere too

As long as it works I will sleep at night :)

I have seen the unit in the passenger side too and I can only imagine that if it burst through it's gonna be a complete new dashboard and that aint gonna be cheap!!

Didn't he do well.

Bet the owner was well chuffed with that test.

d'oh, you can the wobbly skid marks, quite funny really. neow!!!! ooohhh, right, left, right, left, bang, right, scrape

he looks genuinely impressed with it! I'd be crapping it - just imagine the cost of whole new front splitter (~

The driver. Priceless!

I sorry but what a plonker, all very well smiling like that, but just look how much trouble he has caused the other motorists!

Whose car was it? Jeez - to think we have people like that on our roads, might be next to one on a roundabout on my way home!

If you sit in the drivers seat and look across at the passenger side dash and look at it in differant positions you can see the place the airbag will come out of. It looks like a square section Above the glovebox and between the side / middle airvent were the word "Airbag" is Anyone else seen it? :)

Just had another look at mine but it looks quite smooth. I even tried tapping around to see if one bit sounded different but no result. There's one sure way to answer my question but I'm not in a hurry to try it!

On those beemer pictures, what I thought was ironic is that the front skirt seemed to survive the jump over the barrier, but got ripped off when the car was pulled back. Must have really ****ed off the driver to watch that extra damage happening in slow motion.
