Last service was on 05...

Featured Replies

Right well I've bitten the bullet and the car is going in for a service after the other half pointed out that I've had it nearly a year and still not sorted my self out with a service (and driving lenience ) so I've booked the car in for a service on Friday and a Test next month.

What sort of horrors could I be facing baring in mind the last service was at the end of 2005 at 39987 miles and its now 2013 and 78000 miles?

Ouch. The worst part is not having clean oil every 10K. Dirty air & fuel filters wouldn't be harming the car but they won't be helping it. On a 1.4 16V you'll probably needing the cambelt changing so the service could be expensive.

Yep, full service required inc. cambelt and waterpump

So will I notice any difference in the car after its had a little TLC from the garage?

It may feel a little more lively/eager but more importantly, you're extending the life of the car

It hasnt had a service since 2005?

You sir need to slap yourself!

Oil has a lifetime of 10k on fixed services OR a year! Whatever comes first

Wowzers given it's been that long AND that far i'd just give it to the garage and tell them to do EVERYTHING

off the top of my head:

oil change

oil filter

fuel filter

air filter

pollen filter

brake fuild

potentially brake pads/drums/shoes

spark plugs

HT leads maybe

cam belt & water pump

Aux/tensioner pulley maybe

other minor ancillaries - wiper blades light bulbs

potentially some suspension bushes

I'd expect the bill to be the thick end of £500

It should feel freaking awesome when you get it back

The norm is that stuff starts to be past its best after a year or 10 given you've gone 4 times that imagine how bad everything is!

It'll feel like it's super healthy, if not like it's on steroids, when it returns!

When i was a builder the van i used to drive hadnt been serviced in 10 years! :D i left that company for a reason...

Anyhoo, it'll need the full works.

expect a bill of £500...

normal service from a garage is £150-200.

i got given a quote of £400 from skoda just for the timing belt change. I laughed and hung up.

I had a local garage that i know do my belt, water pump and new coolent for £150. All i had to do was supply the parts. see if they can do that for you.

After 8 years the brake fluid change will sharpen up the brakes noticeably, also don't forget the coolant change, console bushes, drop links etc. as if they haven't been done previously then expect the worst. Wheel bearings also don't tend to like being stood over a long period.

With a wait that long and given that you need a lot doing ,and it's only approx 45 miles to MK ( or rather Old Wolcerton ,home of Unit 18 ), why not look up their website and drop Alli an e mail .

That's good advice about going to Unit 18. I rook my wife's Fabia VRS there for its last service.

Don't know if anyone has mentiond this yet but I'd be worried about the cams! They do have problems with wearing.

Oh lord!

The only thing in my defence is I'm the 3rd owner and the first one had it serviced every 10k up until 05 then the next owner is the one to blame for the lack of annual care, as I've had the car 10 months and done about 1500 miles in it learning and lending to the Mrs while her cars been unwell.

Thanks for the heads up and warning me near enough every thing in the engine bay needing replacing :( but i gues these things need doing if I'm going to run the car for the next 5 or so years.

I‘ll let you all know dammage if I don't have to sell up and move in to a box in an ally behind a chip shop.

Bit late now, but I would simply not have bought a car that hadn't been serviced in so long.

As others have said, expect at least a £500 bill.

Only ever get mine done every 15k ish and never had any problems on either of my VRS's so can't really buy that!

Have to agree... shows or at least suggests the previous owner didn't look after it IMO

I hope you got the car very cheap!

You might be lucky to get another 5 years out of that engine!

It was only £700, so it could of been worse.

But now you're paying nearly the same value for a service & cambelt etc.

What oil are you using?

Quantum platinum

Or quantum longlife 3.

All depends what sort of person you are really. One of my favourite statments is..... A good oil is a cheap mechanic!

Especially with the turbo and the cams on the pd engine if your talking about a vrs id say 10k is the max id be willing to do on it. I usually change every 7-8k as i drive it like i stole it

Don't know what oil - fully synthetic stuff at Brookroyd Skoda I guess :-)

I can't see that engine lasting much longer if it's had the same oil in for 8 years and nearly 40k miles! Save yourself from big bills and source a new *looked after* engine :D

If they are putting in longlife 3 oil you'll be alright at 15k intervals but if your putting quantum platinum your kind of pushing it. The pd engine cams are very fragile

Surviving at 186k so far so I guess it is the long life stuff :)
