Oil temperature

How high does the oil temperature get?

I've only just realised I could display this, as I thought the Australian speedo figure replaced the oil temperature display (or so I was told) until I tried it yesterday and it worked.

I got to 111*C today, which seems high for 1-2*C ambient air temperatures. It took very little respite for the oil temperature to fall, I guess the oil/coolant intercooler helps here?

DPF regen maybe? That pushes the temp up, though I've not seen it much over 100 on mine. It does seem to drop quickly once finished.

Max in this country has been about the same as what you saw today but being a petrol engine, I'm not sure how comparable they are in this respect. Max I've seen when abroad was 125 degrees and that was on new long life oil that was put in just a few weeks earlier. It got changed out the week after returning also! Day to day commuting sees around 103-105 as max temps. :)

One of the standard tests for motor oil involves running it in an engine for 100 hours with the oil temperature at 150 degrees C.

Where the oil hits the underneath of the top piston ring, its temperature will be over 300 degrees C.

The temperatures you've been seeing are nothing to worry about. Better to worry about oil temps when they are on the low side, and ensure that high revs are avoided until the oil gets to 95 or 100.

No, pulling fast in 6th uphill. No re-gens today.

Now I know, I'll keep an eye on the temperature in the months to come out of interest.

I wonder what we ever did before an oil temperature display? I would assume we never worried about or even thought about oil temperature.

However I must concur with the OP when towing with the Yeti I do flick to the oil temp display and ease off the throttle if the temp is up over 110'C and when I took the Fabia to Oulton Park for a track day I did watch the oil temp display and again when this got up to 110'C I did a cool down lap, would I have done this if I didn't have the display, probably not.

Modern oils are designed to cope with highs and lows of temperature so I wouldn't worry too much.

Interesting - thanks.

I'm not worried about it, my MG gets higher oil temperatures quiet often - just interested in what people have experienced.

Living in a country with HOT :sun:  summers , temperatures up to 40 C and above, the highest oil temp I have encountered on my Yeti was 110 C.(2.0 TDI DSG) What do you think is the highest figure that I sould watch out from?

From recollection 115 deg C is the highest I've seen maybe a little higher on prolonged climbs on Alpine roads in the summer months with four POB. Generally the local Garrowby Hill climb will take the oil a couple of degrees past 100 in the winter with the lower grill winter cover fitted and a little more in summer without.

Main issue for my Monster though has been cold running, with oil temps in the low 70's after 36 miles of free flowing A road driving; noticeable improvement now with the winter cover in place, although I still get a the odd regen here and there and long periods on 'choke' (950rpm) doing short local runs when it's quite chilly as now.

Thread resurrection alert.. I too have been fretting about 100C plus oil temps but seems I needn't have done. My170  runs in mid 90s but can creep to 102 or 105 sometimes . I am sure my 140 never ran so high . Weird , really ,  as brisk driving in my Caterham yesterday (petrol of course) saw oil temp down in  the 80s , even when ..ahem..pressing on.

Managed this in France with the caravan last year.

The temp dropped fairly quickly to around 100 when we stopped for fuel. The car never missed a beat.

I regularly have seen over 100c on both my Yeti's, especially when towing. It is nothing to worry about.

In fact I would be more concerned about the Caterham, as at 80c the oil will not be evaporating any water vapour in it.

And to be honest, oil pressure is more important than temp in a "performance" car.

Umm Interesting.

Mine when doing a bit of dual carriageway etc is usually around 88 - 90c. Off to South Wales for our monthly trip at the end of the week so will have a check to see what temp I get on route down the M4. Don't often look at the temp to be honest
