Scout Tyres

Featured Replies

My Scout was delivered with Dunlop Sp's and has covered 16300 miles. Theirs a mil and a half left all round before the markers so I'm starting to look around at what's available.

I'm a bit disappointed when I see others have managed upto 24000 on the same tyres ! I drive like a nun most of the time !

Dunlop Sportmaxx seem to be getting excellent reviews.

Thoughts welcome.

My Scout came with Dunlop SP Sport 01's too.

We got 20,000+ miles out of them so went for another full set.

I have a set of the dunlops for sale at the moment and am open to offers!

Since last winter I've been running Goodyear 4 seasons on the Scout much better in winter than the dunlops. Only done about 6k on them so its a bit hard to tell how long they'll last.

If you are looking for a recommendation, then I am so far very pleased with the Hankook Ventus12. Quieter, improved grip and handling and looking to turn in respectable wear figures.

A proper 4 wheel alignment may likely improve things as far as wear, fuel consumption, noise and grip are concerned. It seems fairly common for the general alignment to be out.

I have the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons on my Scout. I just changed them front to back in August after 27,000(ish) miles. Reckon they'll be fine until next winter and about 45-50K miles in total.

They were £150 a corner when I had them fitted but with so much mileage I am pleased enough. Grip seems good and road noise was lower than when I had the factory fitted Pirellis on.

I've ordered a set of these: http://www.tirerevie...ll_package.aspx

All-season tyres which have a 70,000 mile treadwear warranty (when sold in the US).

I won't get 70,000 miles because road surfaces here are rougher, but it should still be decent. I had to import them from the US, but even including freight the price was worth it. They are coming slow-boat and should be here in another month or so.

You've done well to get 16,300 miles out of them... Our SP01's lasted about 12,000 and and then started splitting between the bolck (down to the canvass!). Got rid and have used Vredestein Sportrac 3's since - good all round but classed as a summer tyre rather than all-season and unfortunately Vredestein have decided to replace them with a Sporttract 5...

It'll probably be the Goodyear Four Seasons for me next

All weather tires are neither good on summer and even worst in winter, best of nothing.

My SP 01 lasted about 15,000 miles, then got some Conti SportContact 5, superb in dry and wet. Of course proper Conti TS830 for winter.

If I wanted the ultimate in dry road cornering, why would I have purchased a scout?

The "all season" 4wd tyres I run on my real 4wd's haven't thrown up any surprises yet. Unlike those running summer rubber (dealer fitted) who get caught in a frost (can happen any time of year here) and caught in a slide.

This week we've been past 30C many times during the day and below 5C many times during the night. Another month and frosts will be regular occurances. Do you run your winter tyres through Autumn and Spring?

Just like my 4wd's, for my 4wd cars I'll happily give up the 10% of ultimate summer grip that I never use for 50% or so more cold weather grip that I use every year.

Treadwear rating on SportContact 5 is 280. Treadwear rating on Purecontact is 700. Traction is AA on the Sportcontact 5, A on the purecontact. Temperature rating for both is A.

I've been so impressed with the Goodyear 4 seasons on the Scout that I've put a set on the SLK incredible grip in all conditions

We have the same great combination of cars and I am very tempted to do the same , although I have to say that I am on my 2nd set of Goodyear Optigrips which are simply marvellous in the rain but perhaps not quite so good in dry weather if you believe the reports , which is just as well when you live in Snowdonia !

I chose Optigrip (following on from using Hydragrip) because I want better grip in worse conditions - I reckon I can manage to keep it on the road well enough at other times ;-)

Unfortunately Optigrip is no more, at least in the sizes I want in the UK. They're still available from mytyres but not directly from UK mail-order retailers or tyre fitters. I asked Goodyear and they said Excellence is the nearest replacement in the current range.

I've been pondering whether to change to all-season (Vredestein Quatrac 3) or to continue with two sets of wheels. At the moment I'm tempted to move towards Goodyear Excellence for the summer and change from Snowtrac 3 to Quatrac 3 for winter use, because then the biannual change-over decision is easier. The other advantage I see is that both are non-directional, which means the spare can do either side.

I run Quatrac 3's on my Octy 4x4 and personally I think they are a great tyre. They last quite well all year round and they have been brilliant in the snow. Also got me about at Glastonbury in the mud in 2011. Tyre wear isn't too bad either. The front lasted in excess of 20k miles.

They are a good choice.

Continental Sportcontact 3 top of list at moment. Just had a frank discussion with the Mrs when she suggested we perhaps buy a cheap tyre to last us a year or so ...... Yeah we can get some remoulds for £35 a corner. Great lets go with those then ........ < sigh >

Why not compromise and go for the Maxxis MA-Z4S which isn't a bad tyre, copes in the winter and is about £85?

Just an update for anyone doing a search.

You can now get the Nexen N-Priz 4S (four season tyre) which has the "snowflake in mountain" symbol for about £75. The pattern looks quite handy for off road traction too, but I've no experience of them to recommend them.

Based on some reviews of other Nexen tyres I'd give them a shot.

I'm going to replace the standard Dunlop SP 01 Sport's on our Scout whenthey are worn with four season or winter tyres and leave them on all year.

The wife only does 8K per year.

I've had two sets of Nexen n 8000 , and they still haven cost as much as the Michelin's I replaced the Dunlops with,I'm very happy with them.

My PureContacts arrived a few months back, but the Bridgestones (Turanza and Adrenaline) weren't as far gone as I thought.  They were all around 4mm.

So new tyres wrapped and stacked while I wear out the old.

I swapped some 205/55R16 Maxxis Presea for a mid-winter run where every forecast was for doom and snow.  They were slightly worse for fuel consumption than the 17's.

My Scout also came with the Dunlops and I disliked them as much as the ones that came on my previous Octavia 4x4.  I got about 15k out of them but I swap from Summer to Winter tyres so I can't be certain.  Most of my driving is up and down hills so don't expect the great mileage figures that some folk seem to get.  I recently fitted Michelin Primacy 3s and so far have been impressed with the grip and lower noise than the Dunlops produced.  I decided to give the Michelins a go as I was impressed with the wear I have got from my Alpin Winter tyres, not a fair comparison maybe given the different compounds etc but I'm hoping that the quality of materials is relative.
