skyroof rattles

Featured Replies

Its seems my ceiling is making some noises even when cruising on good roads. My previous car had a complicated skyroof (skywindow) and it was well documented on the internet, from completely dismanteling it to the most basic fixes..I have searched about yeti skyroof and haven't found anything about it..

Any experiences with yours?

Sometimes creaks a bit when covered in ice but ok when car warms up.

Cheers

If you are trying to research the unit itself, afaik, it's the same as fitted to the VW Tiguan, Sharan and Porsche Cayenne as well as a good few others within the vag group. Hope that helps.

correct me if I'm wrong but do one company not make and supply to all the car manufacturers, BMW , Mercy, VW etc.

They are audible cruising on the roads but are louder particularly when entering inclines (such as entering my garage). I'm sure its the ceiling I just don't know where..

thanks for the tips guys

MANY companies out there do the same thing... not just one. You will find Blaupunkt radios in many cars, but also Panasonics and Sonys (albeit only Ford brands the Sony as such, with the other companies passing these things off as their own)... and the same with sunroofs.

The Yeti's is made by Arvin Meritor AFAIK.

I have had a constant problem of creaking noises coming from the windows of my Yeti (since new) which everyone on this site suggested was the seals. There are many others who have complained of the same problem too.

However, there was a post some time ago (which at the time I dismissed as being stupid) that these creaking noises were related to the type of shampoo that you use to clean the car which in effect, was drying out the seals and making them creak.....or something like that. Certain shampoos have a wax in them (or whatever) and they are not good for the seals..I cant remember the exact details.

Anyway, I always clean my car once every two weeks at the local garage with a jet wash.

So, taking this advice on board I have refrained from cleaning the car (now just with water).....and do you know what.....all the creaks/noises have disappeared.

If I ever met this bloke who posted this advice...I would buy him a beer.

Anyway I dont know if this is linked to your problem (there are seals around a sunroof) but its worth a thought.

the noises seems something not well put together, but that could also be it... I have a plastic/seals renovator/protector. I never used it on the skyroof.

I'll let you guys know if it works

thanks

That is the best description on the noise (not screwed together)...mine has been in and out of Skoda so many times that I know everyone on first name terms. I am amazed how much noise creaking windows can make. Nevertheless, all they do is reapply a silicone spray to the seals which lasts two minutes.. My advice would be from now on just spray wash the car in clean water and wait two or three weeks and see if the noise goes away. Don't apply anything until the spring. If its the same problem that I had (and I had it for two years) it does go away very quickly once you understand what is causing the problem.. I will buy a more professional shampoo in the summer and clean the car by hand

I noticed an irritating rattle for a few days last week that I could not pin down. It was doing my head in after checking the usual things like the seat belt hangers to the crates in the boot, door bins etc, checking the glove box, under seat storage, stuff under the boot floor and around the spare wheel.

As it tuned out it was a de-ice can nearly empty waddling about in the passenger foot well. Jana once again provides a noise free experience..... apart from the music of course.

Made I laugh :giggle:

Just to expland on my comment above, this image is an example of some of the companies that make bits for the VW Up:

It seems it isn't the skyroof at all.... Just noticed while washing the car that there is something loose inside the rear right wheel arch! Don't know how to remove the wheel arch lining to see what it is..

Has anybody found a solution to the pillar creaks from the drivers side? If they have, is a diy solution?, as the garage doesnt seem to be willing to help? Also is anybody else having problems regulating the heaing system (i have manual +air con). I find it hard to get a small amount of heat as no reation from the system until the heat knob is up to half way. Thanks BigM

Hello,

Yes I have completely cured my creaky pillars (the noise actually comes from the top rubber seal on each door and is the result of wax drying in the seal). I did start another thread about this but have yet to post that I had found a solution. Having said that, I only cured it last week and have just come back from a completely creak free week in Pembrokeshire.

To rid yourself of these deeply irritiating little creaks you need to clean the wax deposits from the first of the grooves in the seal on the top of the doors. Initially I only treated the main seals that sit on the car body but this did not fix it. You have to clean the groove nearest to the outside of the door that runs along the top. I used Gummi Pflege rubber cleaner which I ordered over the internet for less than £10. Having said that, you might find that another rubber cleaner / treatment such as Autoglym rubber and vinyl care will work fine. I am confident that if you do this then, as unlikely as it sounds, your creaks will disappear. If you use a car shampoo with a high wax content then you may need to repeat the above after washing.

Hope this helps,

Shrub.
