parking sensor problems......

Featured Replies

hi

for the last week or so, the sensors have been playing up. usually, when i stick it in reverse, the radio goes quiet and i get the picture of the car in the display with visual and audio aids as i near an object.

for some reason, now when i put it in reverse, i get a long beeeeeeeeeeep, bout 5 seconds, the radio stays the same volume and no picture in display. theres no noise as i near an object, so its obviously not working, but........ as soon as i take the gear out of reverse, the radio volume dips just for a split second then back to normal.

weird yep??

anyone come across this before or can offer a solution? ive got a towbar, but if they were picking that up, id still get the dip in radio sound and a constant beep as though i was about to hit something. and id guess it would be the same if they were dirty.

thanks

Sounds like problem with one or more of the Sensors. If you have a VCDS Cable handy, you could trace the actual problem. However, you can also manually check if the Sensors are fine by engaging the reverse gear and placing your ear close to each of the Sensors, where you should hear very faint "ticks" being emitted by each of the Sensors. If you don't hear in any of it, you know where the problem is.

excellent thanks. although the diagnosis isnt :-(

i did as the link advised, and it seems the drivers side sensor has packed in. im not great at cars, but i reckon im gonna have to buy a new one from ebay and try and change it myself, erk.......... too much for a garage to do it.

wish me luck :-D

Bad news that the sensor needs changing. The good news is that the outer right one is the easiest to change, I have just done mine. The dealers will tell you that the whole bumper has to come off which is time consuming. I have 05 pre FL Octavia and at the rear of the car there is a small section of undertray which when unbolted helps access to the outside sensor.

The key point for me was to borrow my local garage's ramp so I could stand underneath the car. This makes it much easier to see the offending sensor.

Good luck with this.

thanks, ill maybe start having a look in the next day or so. would there be any problem with taking the dodgy one out so i can see the part number, then leaving it out for a few days til an ebay jobbie comes through the post? or would i need to replace it straight away for weather protection or something?

thanks

When I did mine I took the old one out and just wrapped the connector for about 10 days to keep any moisture out while I got mine. Have just checked Ebay and neither of my recommended suppliers, who supplied pre painted sensors, are currently advertising so not sure where you can get a cheap coloured sensor - unpainted ones seem to be available from Latvia.

If your motor is a pre-facelift you do not need to worry about the part number as the one in my 'how to' is correct, if yours is a Facelift then it is best to whip it out and check - the correct number is on the side of the socket, not the number on the body of the sensor.

its a 57 plate, so pre-facelift, and silver. would this need to be painted or unpainted? not sure what colours they come in. any suggestions as to the cheapest way i can get a silver, 'correct' sensor then please? would i buy a silver one, or have to paint one up?

thanks a lot :-)

Get one of the Latvian ones - they are cheap and work fine. A drop of touch up paint is all you need. I left mine black.

er.... i havent seen any latvian ones phil. could you point me in the right direction please? :-)

thanks

This one-

If you paint it then only use a very light coat - several very light coats with a spray can is best, clean the sensor first but do not use any harsh cleaners or block the sensor itself

thanks, ive just contacted the seller and asked if he'd paint it silver for me too, it seems to give that option.

cheers

Hi Sadexpunk - please let us know how much the seller is charging for doing the painting; looking for silvers ones myself. Ta

just had a go at taking the old one out...... they dont make it easy do they??? unscrewed the black lower part of the bumper, but that doesnt seem to want to come easily away from the silver bumper itslef, so ive left it for now. ive taken the small section of undertray out, which means i can at least see the sensor. ive also wrestled it away from the adhesive, but as the guide says, it still doesnt make it any easier to access or remove. and i may have to cut the tape holding the wiring, to allow it to drop further.

itd be a lot easier if i could fathom out an easier way of removing the lower section of bumper, they look like theyre only clips, but nothing seems intuitive about it. ive also got a towbar fitted, which seems to make access to the others a bit harder, i was going to swap em and see if that solved anything, but..... for now ive just pressed it back in the hole for another day :-(

EDIT: another thing which makes me a little uneasy is that im sure it worked for a few minutes yesterday, and if so then it may not be the sensor. i keep trying it in reverse to see if i can replicate that, and catch it working for a short time, but nah, it doesnt want to play :-/

I had this, after working the sensor and the connector mine worked for 4 days before failing again apparently something to do with the internals of the sensor. From my experience it will fail again very soon. Had the replacement in now for several weeks and still working perfectly.

As in the guide when cutting the tape cut along the retaining clip with a very sharp knife and a gentle touch, DO NOT cut against the cable itself for risk of cutting the wires.

just an update on this for anyone interested. i used the latvian chap, and despite his insistence he would supply it silver, it was black :-)

decent comms tho, and he refunded me a tenner for some silver paint, so i sprayed it yesterday and fitted it. fiddly or what?? :-) and as mentioned above, i dont think i could have done it on any of the other 3 sensors, this was the only accessible one wihout stripping more of the car, which i dont think i could do.

i lost the little clip that holds it onto the lug (i wasnt expecting it to fly off, thought it would just unclip), but it all seems to be holding up fine. i was going to use duck tape to stick it back to the inside of the bumper, but i didnt have any and needed to get the lower tray back up as id be driving in the snow, so i used parcel tape. bodge job or what?? :-D i intend stripping it when im at work again tho to use duck tape instead, but knowing me ill probably leave it if its still working ok.

thanks to everyone for your help and advice.
