Picked up the car, better then expected yet embarrassing city safe test.

Featured Replies

Just wanted to re-assure those who are still waiting to pick there's up that the car is worth the wait, my gear box is quiet and road noise well suppressed, it's much better in nearly all aspects then the fiat 500 it replaced.

One thing I would warn against is testing the city safe, we put our empty pushchair in the road and whilst the neighbours gathered to see this amazing safety feature kick in my with drove straight into the pram and it shot across the road. So don't go making a fool of your self unless you have an inflatable car like the dealers have to test it with. For god sake don't get your mate to stand in front of you as you charge at them at 10 mph you could hurt them!

Opps?

Were you braking as the pram came across the front or just coasting along? I thought I read somewhere you have to be breaking for it to assist (increase the breaking effect) in stopping. Did you switch off the City safe by mistake (the button by the 12v socket) The one my stupid sales person said was the ESP off button)?

we tested it on tigger at a meet, works fine ;)

and you dont need to be braking, and it will work with slight acceleration, and clutch up or down...

no briskoda members were hurt in the making of these videos ;)

What's the point of that? I thought it was supposed to kick in when you're not braking, because you're looking the wrong way when someone steps infront of you etc.

as above , you dont need to brake, we tested it in all permutations ;)

Ah good :) That's what I was hoping for with the Octavia III.

the only times it will not operate is when you switch it off (snow/fog ect), or above the stated speed, or when accelerating hard. (it works on gentle acceleration we tried :) )

we posted the vids on skoda facebook page, skoda liked it, but skoda UK said "while we are glad you are happy with your new citygo, we would advise you dont try out citysafe on your friends.." lol...

here are my feet off the pedals lol..

I stand corrected. I must admit the off/on switch for City safe seems to be in a stupid place, it could quite easily be pressed buy placing something over it?

the tricky thing is, if you turn it off (which we did in the heavy snow) it says off on the dash, then the message goes, and there is no visable way to tell if its on or off (no light on the switch or permenant dash light) with a bit more testing though we found if you turn it off, it will be back on when you next restart the car, much like traction control in the other skodas, it on by default, and off when you hit the switch! but it would be nice to have a warning light to remind you...

I did another test this time I had a large bin bag about grill level in height filled with garden leaves and rubbish like that. I drove at it and yet again I just ran it over! Im sure the sytem works with big objects but I think if a dog or cat ran out in front of you it would unlikely do anything.

its going to be looking over the obstruction.. you could have a hill that high ;) it needs to be car hight! as high as the windscreen :)

I drove into a bush tonight it was huge! I wonder if my city safe actually works. My wife is scared I'll crash testing the city safe

bush?! lol.. that wont be reflective enough, its designed to stop you running into the back of another car ;) lol @ the wife statement ;)

I'd stop before you damage it. :D

Try it with two people holding a blanket across in front of you, if that doesn't work it's not active.

Worked on mine.

I have decided to stop now! I was eating dinner with the family and I had a eureka moment and ran out to setup 2 wheel bins each side of the car with the bin lids clamping a big sheet, this time something happened although the car didn't stop before it hit the sheet there was lots of clicking from the dash and the little symbol flashed so something is happening and when I did dab the brake the car stopped instantly, I think it was 2 dark for it to work perfectly as it didn't stop before hitting the sheet. I did demo this system with a big inflatable car prop with a vw up and it worked really well so I'm sure it does work but the neighbourhood kids keep pointing at me and laughing, my wife thinks im going to wrap the car round a lamppost and I do have the urge to test it on the neighbours car now, so I'll quit before I do anything stupid.

I was just on my way out with the kids and a blanket to test it out. But will wait till the weekend. It sounds like it's one of those things you hope you never need it until something bad happens. Then you are glad you've got it.

It needs something to reflect off , it's aimed at not hitting other cars . Not pushchairs , so feel free to try on children ...

This topic is comedy gold.

"101 things that won't activate City Safe..."

Hint: City Safe is fully explained in the handbook and on Skodas website. It explains the operating limits and how it works! An essential read before gathering the neighbours or damaging your paintwork!

I have to say I'm not sure I would opt for the Citysafe having read up on it in the manual and the situations where it might 'accidentally' activate.

We didn't spec it on ours, despite having nearly every option other than that and the sunroof as we were a bit put off -remember though -these things are only an aid and not a failsafe.

I have it myself, and thought about that too, but as far as I know there have been no adverse reports.

My wife wants our Citigo to have the auto box (you know, the one you don't have to steer!). So Citysafe will be ideal for her!!! :giggle:

Does the car stall when it auto stops?

Does the car stall when it auto stops?

yes if you have the clutch up, no if you have it down ;)
