Wind screen replacment insurance questions

Featured Replies

Hi folks

My car at some stage (prior to me owning it) has had a windscreen repair done, yesturday i noticed 2 small cracks coming out of the repair (only visible from the inside)

The damage is on the passenger side around 8 inch's from the edge and 5 inchs from the bottom.

Im considering getting it replaced but have a few questions....

Firstly am i likely to get a skoda screen? i dont want to end up with another screen without the sunstrip, and secondly does it could as a claim?

Im fully comp with admiral multi car so get windscreen cover for free.... that being said theres a £75 excess for replacments, just havnt done this before (been driving 3 years) and dont wanna end up paying extra for it for the next 5 years lol.

thank you

It won't count as a claim :)

No it isn’t considered a claim and you will get ‘like for like’ so if you currently have a top tint / sunstrip then mention it when you call and you will get the same.

It will not be a Škoda screen unless there is something quite rare about it like being heated etc.

Were the cracks there when you bought the car? as it is likely they have been ‘repaired’ so should not spread anymore.

A few things to consider are:

  • You will probably not get a Škoda screen
  • It may be a lesser quality to the one currently fitted
  • They may damage your paintwork removing the old screen
  • The new screen may not get fitted correctly.

Now although any of the above will be isolated incidents, they can and DO happen. Personally I would not change the screen until it is needed.

I was fortunate that the fitter that did mine was more than competent (standing there watching may of helped, but I hope not) and he used a genuine Škoda screen because mine is heated… it did however take the company 3 separate screen orders to get a heated screen in! fortunately I double checked each time and did not accept the ‘yes it should be heated’ initial reply to my question, only for them to check and say… no it is not!!… twice :wall:

Thanks folks

Erm as i said i knew the screen had been repaired because i noticed it when i looked over the car before i bought it, as to the crack being there i honestly cant say, as said theres no crack visible from the outside (just a repaired chip), and i hadnt noticed it in the few months ive owned it but then tbh because its quite low down on the passenger side its a part of the screen i doubt im using when driving.

Only noticed it yesturday when i picked up my mum and the half blind old girl spotted it lol.

Tbh i think ill keep an eye on it and hold off on getting a new one unles it becomes an issue.

Thank you

I had my windscreen replaced through Admirals specific windscreen repair company, can't think of the name at the moment.

The guy who did my windscreen did a very good job from what I can tell. I had a chip and a small crack in the field of view.

It was borderline repair or replace the screen. I went with the replace option as I am quite fussy with screen being as clean as possible, and the chip, even repaired would bug me.

I've had a chip repair and two new windscreens since I've owned my vRS.

Never had an issue with Autoglass when they've come out to sort it.

In fact, the bloke has always said how easy the Skoda is to sort (replacement) because it's so well made.

I've used auto glass through admiral and other insurance companies, never had a problem and the new screen had the sun strip etc.

Been through this with SWMBO. It is listed under a type of claim on a number of search tools. We declare it, but it doesn't make any difference to the premium.

My insurers (Allianz) specify that all free repairs are to be carried out by Autoglass, and require the owner to pay a larger amount if Autoglass are not used for glass replacement. When I needed a new windscreen and wanted the genuine Skoda part, I paid extra to use a local fitter who agreed to get the correct item.

I recently had a stone chip repaired and a few days later noticed how there is a blemish that is only noticeable from the inside when it catches the light. I went to the local Autoglass depot to ask if the repair could be improved and they told me they only guarantee mechanical repair and do not make any claims about optical clarity or distortion.

They said they could have a go but it almost certainly wouldn't be any better, and that the only way to get it better would be to replace the windscreen. I'll probably end up doing this when I have funds, as the blemish is in the driver's vision.

A useful snippet is that one person said that if they had a stone chip in the driver's field of view they'd not bother with getting it repaired, instead they'd leave it until a replacement windscreen was necessary. The implication was that repairs only make sense when replacement glass is hard to find or when the stone chip isn't particularly noticeable to the driver.

I just had my screen replaced by Admiral £75 excess.Auto Windscreens replaced it with the correct screen.Although its not technically a claim its still a claim that needs to be declared as ive just found out from my new insurance company. On the add claim section on all policies online there is a catagory for windscreen claim, adding my recent glass claim as increased my insurance with everyone £50 roughly give or take..so it seems they still recoupe the money via that means.splendid not.
