How to spot a common rail TDi from a PD?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere on the site (if so, being a newbie I haven't found it yet) but - I'm looking for a vRS TDi wagon and have read that the common rail is better than the PD. So when I am out looking at used cars, is there an easy way to spot a common rail TDi from the PD? e.g. exterior/interior changes that were introduced at the same time, or something that's easy to see under the bonnet, engine code, anything like that

Oh and if anyone has one to sell give us a shout!!!

Many thanks in advance

Dan

I wouldn't say 'better' (although I prefer the CR). The PD has its place and many PD owners like the noticeable rush of power and I suppose this might be that because its so noticeable it feel almost like there's more there. For me it's frustrating (nothing. Nothing. Nothing. GO GO GO nothing. Nothing.......) but if you stay on the throttle and work the gears hard its just as quick.

You'll have to be slightly more aware of DPF issues on the PD too, allegedly, although I suspect that part I this is the simple fact that most PDs are older then the CRa, plus the DPF was a bit of an afterthought on the PD. I dare say you could pick up a PD, have th DPF gutted and possibly even get the power mapped more evenly for around te same price as a CR though so don't discount it completely......

Common rails generally came in 2009. If you google Vw cr engine bay and pd engine bay or similar you'll see the difference. If you drive them, the pd has a huge low down surge of power where the cr power is more spread out.

Not sure about the CRs but the PD has a distinct three parallel pipe rail going along the front of the engine. I don't believe the CR does.

CEGA is the engine code for a cr engine I do believe and BKD is for a pd engine. You should fine engine code on a sticker under the boot carpet near the wheel well or in the log book.

Now there's an idea, especially as CRs are a bit over my budget ...
