Intermittent Ignition Problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone experienced problems with the ignition where the engine continues to run despite turning off the engine and taking the key out. I have a 2007, pre face lift, Octavia VRs TDi. Annoyingly (or perhaps fortunately), this appears to be an intermittent fault and has happened a few times now. When this has happened, sometimes I have been able to put the key back in the ignition, switch it back on and off again a couple of times and the engine has eventually turned off, however, on other occassions the only solution has been to stall the car. The battery warning light and some other light stay on and I have just had to leave the car. Eventually those lights go out and the car sort of resets itself, however, until that happens the car will not start. When it does restart, the ESP and tyre pressure warning lights remain on for a few minutes, again until the car seems to reset itself when I can manually turn the ESP back on and the typre pressure warning goes out.

Any thoughts on the cause or experience of similar problems would be appreciated. I have taken this to my independant VAG specialist for a diagnositic check which revealed nothing. They cleared the faults, of which there were many, and couldn't get the fault to reappear so their only advice was to bring it in the next time it happened. This hasn't really been practical as it tends to happen when I've just got to work (50 miles from the garage) or when I've got home (long after they've closed for the day).

Thanks,

could be the faulty switch in the diesel pump......... because most of the diesel engines shut down by cutting down the fuel supply from the pump.......

Regards

Faulty ign switch maybe?

When you switch off does anything else switch off with it?

Faulty stop relay. (found this on numerous diesel's but not on this make)

Any possibility of an oil leak and runaway?

When I switch off and remove the key everything stays on, the car is still drivable: lights, power steering, etc are all operating. I've had an oil leak and had the engine runaway through burning the oil in the turbo before on a previous car (an old Ford Mondeo) and it's definately not that.

Probably ignition barrel switch failure.........

If everything stays on - it does suggest a faulty ignition switch - when you took it in to your independent dealer did you let them know that all of the accessories also stay on ?

Important piece of information.

When this has happened, sometimes I have been able to put the key back in the ignition, switch it back on and off again a couple of times and the engine has eventually turned off,

I still think its ign switch related.

I posted this issue a while ago now, thanks for the responses by the way, but have never got to the bottom of the issue.  It generally got better over the summer but did appear a couple of times in the last 6 months and I'm expecting it to get worse over the winter.  However, just today I had something happen which I feel has to be related.  The engine just stopped as I was driving along but all the electrics stayed on.  I could only notice by the battery light coming on (given road noise and radio), I was able to restart the engine as I was coasting and so no problems but it shouldn't happen.  I think timing wise, the engine cut out just as I put my foot on the clutch (and no I didn't stall, this has happened before and I know the difference).  Would this still be consistent with ignition switch failure?  Any help much appreciated.

Just a quick update, my car is in the garage over the Christmas period due to the electrical ignition fault causing my engine not to stop when the ignition is turned off.  This fault now causing my car electrics to stay live and then drain the battery.  I have had the RAC out twice and hand to jump my car from the wife's once, hence why mine is now in the garage.  The garage 1st had my car to look at in November, fortunately, the problem remained for a while when the car was with them.  It occurred that the fault linked to the central locking.  When the engine failed to turn off, by locking and then unlocking the car the engine would shut off.  This then initially looked like it was linked with the Comfort Control Unit / Module, however, further investigation has shown that this unit is undamaged, nor are the plugs or wires.  What appears, at the moment, to have caused the issues are a couple of relays in the engine bay which seem to be highly corroded.  Both relays are apparently linked to the similar systems.  Fingers crossed this will solve my car problems but I will keep you posted and let you know what relays exactly where corroded.
