Issue Reversing Uphill

Featured Replies

My drive slopes uphill and I park facing downhill.

Issue is that the car seems to lack power in reverse and makes getting off the drive a bit of a trial, some times it will go up fine, other times it will get halfway and just run out of steam and stall.

Any suggestions that might be causing this.

BTW My previous car reversed up the slope with no issues, so don't think its my driving

Handbrake not releasing properly, or low diesel level running away from tank pick up on the more extreme angle? Strange one that.

Don't think its the handbrake as car reverses up other inclines fine but then the engine is warm.

Tried this morning with the asr turned off, car moved a couple of inches then lost power and I had to apply handbrake depress clutch then start off again with no issues.

car has over 1/4 of a tank left, will see when I next fill up if a full tank makes any difference.

Are the heater plugs operating correctly?

Have you tried reversing onto drive and pulling off in first?

Please check with the spark plugs...usualy diesel czech boys are like this :)

As far as I am aware. They come on and go out and car starts up fine. It's just when I go to reverse up the drive when the engine is cold that it stalls.

I have once I am sure I had no problems pulling away, but don't often reserve on to the drive.

Didn't think diesels have spark plugs, if you mean heater plugs then these appear to be working fine.

Try dropping forward a foot before reversing. That would exclude any problem of binding brakes.

Ok will try to do this in the morning but only have a couple of feet before touching the bumper of the Wifes car.

Drove car forwards a couple of feet down the hill then tried to reverse up the hill, car seems to want to stall and appeared not to want to rev above 1000 rpm and the only way to make progress was to push the clutch below the hitting point.

If I remember I will reverse on the driveway tonight and see if that makes a difference.

not reving over 1000rpm might suggest a buggered CTS or MAF.

Can you get your fault codes read? I would suggest disconnecting the MAF and trying it (but that will log a fault, so nice to check before hand).

Just to clarify car only seems to rev to 1000 rpm when the engines cold and reversing up driveway, and in normal driving car revs through the whole rev range.

Had CTS replaced a couple of months ago.

was the CTS replaced with a proper VAG part or a cheapo part from ebay?

Any fault codes?

CTS was replaced with proper VAG part (green coloured), the original being the black one. CTS was replaced as EML lit and fault code showed CTS needed replacement.

You're not catching the brake pedal while reversing are you? Apart from putting the brakes lights on the switch also cuts power to the engine or something like that lol

Or if the switch is faulty, it could be sensitive to orientation.

Brake light switch cost me under a tenner last year from the local vw dealers, push and twist to release and the same to replace lol

Worth a go

I am sure I don't catch the brake pedal and wife has the same problem reversing with smaller feet.

Lol could be fun parking in the car park @ work.

Back on topic not sure how steep the drive is, how would I work this out ?

If you've got a protractor to hand, you hold try to it level, look through it slope and read off angle

you can also make an inclinometer from a protractor, some string and a weight

A little OTT maybe :giggle:

Use them for helping to working out avalanche risk
