Folding Mirrors

Featured Replies

I did find this (see the fourth diagram):

http://www.pifiu.com...vw.a4.wd.58.pdf

It suggests to my untrained eye that the folding part of the switch is treated as another option alongside L and R with different resistors in the circuitry resulting in different voltages being passed to the module to allow the module to distinguish between selections.

So maybe it doesn't need another wire to enable the folding function. Anyway I have ordered a used switch from a highline Scirocco for peanuts and I am going to hook it up when it arrives to test voltages and see if my suspicions are right. I might then take a gamble on the pair of folding mirrors from eBay and hope they work. I am checking first they provide all the other functionality so worst case scenario is I'll have mirrors which still provide such functionality and I can either sell them back on eBay at a minimal loss, or keep them as spares.

you will also require MAX version door controllers

I was thinking about adding them to mine, but couldn't find the controllers or the mirrors cheaply.

VW golf parts are available in large volumes 2nd hand

You can't fit VW controllers to a skoda either

Has to be 1T0 part numbers for skoda

Eddie

Thanks, I have those according to VCDS. Whether the Skoda controllers are sufficiently similar to the VW ones which support this I'm not sure of course, but the part numbers only differ in the first three characters so very hopeful.

The pre-fl L&K controllers, ie. the ones with all the whistles and bells on, do not have the icon on at 7 o'clock as in the ones in the link above. Unless you can find something equivalent to swap them with which DO have that feature, they won't work as there's no way of making the folding mirrors turn on/off.

I rang a breakers the other day and paid a few quid for a used scirocco switch so hoping it will have that icon. It sounded from the description over the phone that it did have all it needed and it should arrive soon so fingers crossed.

Update on this: got the switch yesterday and it seems to send a voltage across the same pins as the L/R selector in the folding position so I think I'm going to gamble and try the mirrors. The only issue is the leds are VW red which will look a bit silly with the green when illuminated so I am going to see if I can change or colour the existing leds inside the switch if they are easily accessed.

Adam

Remember to put a metal clip/paperclip/somthing across the two legs of the LED you're putting in to act as a heat sync when soldering to disperse the conducted heat from the iron otherwise you might cook the LED.

Thanks mate. Opened up the scrap switch and it looks like serious ballache to replace the existing leds, so might have to disconnect them and use the empty pin 4 to create a new circuit for a green one so this is useful to know.

Or I may just disconnect the red lighting and go unlighted.

Does anyone with a pre fl car on here actually have power fold mirrors? Im beginning to doubt they were ever manufactured after buying a set from eBay which despite claims to support power folding have no wiring to the pivot point and no obvious motor!!

Thanks in advance

Adam

No, tried saying this in an earlier post on this thread. Skoda never made a single pre-fl model with electric folding mirrors which is why i posted that SkodaCZ said they couldn't think of a way that you could retro fit one cos there was no wiring or module to accomodate it. I suggested that you might me able to fudge something together, but it would be heath robinson as there's nothing ever made for it in a pre-fl to latch on to in the first place.

I think you've probably wasted your money! Trying to get a refund would be your best bet.

Edited by blackspaven

You did indeed. I should have re read the thread before posting! I will be getting a refund for the mirrors I've bought but the guy I bought them off is convinced they should fold and that he has even checked with his manufacturer. My theory is that no one has had this issue as no one has folding as an option. As the mirrors do everything else but fold, they work for other users as expected and they are simply mislabelled.

I haven't quite given up think as one of the techs is kindly looking at part numbers for me but getting to that point.

I need a life as the eBay ad really got me excited...

Before you send them back

post up some pictures or email me some

how many wires go into the mirror plug and what are the pin outs

Eddie

Thanks. There are 12 wires. 2 to the heating element, 3 go behind the mirror to the signal and puddle light and the other 7 go to the eight pin plug that feeds the adjustment motor housing that the mirror glass clips to (ill add some pictures tomorrow). 7 seems a lot for the two adjustment motors but I cant see how that would fold the unit as a whole.

Pins 6 to 12 of the regulator connector run to the adjustment motor housing. Pins 1 2 and 4 of the regulator connector run to the lights and pins 4 and 5 are the heating element (pin 4 is used for two ground wires).

Thanks

What are the part numbers on the label on the motor?

Not related to your folding issue, but I could do with sourcing 2 motors on their own. Are the motors labelled the same each side?

I reckon other manufacturers use the same motors and they can be bought separately. Skoda want to sell me a whole mirror assembly to replace a motor!

The motor is a memory type, so depending on your module on the passenger side it may work mirror lowering on reverse

on the plug that goes in the door controller are pins 14 and 15 occupied (mirror folding)

Hi Andy

Do you mean the circular block holding the pair of adjustment motors? If so they are very easily separated by three screws and a wiring plug so but according to etka not available separately sorry. See:https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=4&ved=0CEgQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.auto-parts.spb.ru%2Fcat%2Fau%2Fau.mycat%3FSelPg%26t%3DuXtyV2B7clcke3JX_yEabog6K3HqIuDbNHpyV4yk8me5O3AoWFd626lXWkq5W3LetCgan59bcj9MfehxmDgYSRmzok2HCdgeO9v9m6L1l5%2FNUjGfc4jWmI7Dwh8JcPYPLnp04e8OXDMwtSRvg_JAM718Wjq7WoX1advDNa1h9N0C8czDHL1nzLRvSBiu0YSQND2ljx4rwq_FYfcBEcuOCnBvkxX7MUBjvQ%3D%3D&ei=wHpoUdCHLcPcOc6igOgO&usg=AFQjCNHJ0ABMCpuygoM4_k0hDh4VT4NtJg

The number on the label is visible if you zoom in but pretty sure its not a part number as we know them (00318374 or 983/004-632). Maybe a trip to the scrappy??

Adam

Hi Eddie

Thanks I will have a look at that. Thinking probably not though as only 12 wires in total in the loom to the mirror and they are all spoken for without folding being an option.

Adam

Not being funny, but if the motor to fold them is there, there may be a way of getting it to work, I just think it'd have to be wired in completely independently to the rest of the car so you'd end up with a random set of bits & bobs going to the fuseboard. A motor is a motor and a switch is a switch: it can't be that hard to fudge something to make the motor go back & forth, just won't be oem looking.

Yes agreed but the issue I actually have is the motor isn't there! Despite the advert claiming it was part of the mirror assembly, its not part of it. Given the effort I put in because the advert said it was, I am little miffed with the seller..... Needless to say they are on their way back for a refund.

If such a part existed (i.e. a mirror assembly for pre FL octavia with folding, even aftermarket), then technically I think it could be made to work as I think the L&K top spec door regulators provide for it. When I next get the door card off, I'll look at pins 14 and 15 as Ed suggests above and see what wiring is present. It may be as simple as running wires from those pins to the motor in the assembly if such as assembly is available.

Adam

I have a '58 L&K, so probably the most recently made build of the pre-fl model, and the mirror control has NO provision for folding mirrors unless you can find a way of wiring it so that they fold in on the neutral setting at 3 o'clock between left & right. The only other setting is for the heated mirrors at 10 o'clock on the switch as you look at it.

That switch works by sending a different current to the regulator when the switch is in L or R mode. The switch from the scirocco or the fl l&k works by sending a different current again when in the folding position. The switch has different resistors in it which applied to the constant voltage yields the different currents to the regulator. So if the regulator can interpret the variable current from the newer switch sent when in the folding position, then technically it should be possible.
