Vibration @ 1.5k-2.2k revs

Featured Replies

Hi all!

Trying to diagnose a problem with the ole girl... Got the NSF CV replaced recently because of a split boot but just before this I was getting a slight vibration when accelerating.

Now I notice it more I have pinpointed it only vibrates when the revs are between 1.5k and 2.2k and doesn't do it in neutral and mostly when accelerating/sitting in a gear between that range. (I think it clunks at speed but can't tell if its a pothole or not!! lol) (and those that have seen my MOT post will know I have recently tracked and balanced too)

Could this be a sign of the inner cv going? :@

Hi ya Lee, going on from what you've identified thus far have you tried loading it up a bit into corners etc to see if that exaggerates the problem/symptoms & I'm mostly thinking right turning. This brought out the early signs of my NS CV failure & it only worsened in a straight line when relatively near failure! In my case it didn't relate to rev range more turning (right) & later higher speeds eg. on motorway. A long shot but could it still be a balance related issue, even though you've had a recent re-balance? Like me you had WB advisories but think that related to the rears? Unlikely to be a driveshaft balance issue would have thought!

Hope you can sort mate & please feel free to PM if you need to ;)

First check your tires for any lumps, bad patches, etc.

Then see if your counterweight on longer CV shaft is not loose.

Then look for any play at front bearings and suspension.

Then check the engine/gearbox mounts (coolant pump rubber mount especially) for tightness/integrity.

If the vibration is engine-speed dependant, and only happens when the car is in gear, I'm afraid that my thoughts turn immediately to the gearbox, particularly the input shaft and its bearings.

It could be a mounting though, so I'd check those first, even though they should still give the vibration in neutral.

Check the inner CVs. Had a similar thing on an Escort, and it was the inner CV. It was only at a certain engine speed range which I guess may have been down to the torque - either way, that's what it was.

Thanks for the help guys, I wanted to see what you all suggested before taking the front end apart trying to fix the problem.

I shall tackle the easiest ones for now and wait for nicer weather before I do the rest, hopefully finding the problem. I guess she didn't like going from ~5k miles a year to ~11k :o

How many miles 'she' has on board?

How many miles 'she' has on board?

Currently 51.1k

At such low mileage you shouldn't have any CV shaft problem, especially vibrations on straight line, specific for CV joints terminal failure. Here's a video below that might interest you.
