interior lights

Featured Replies

does any body else find those two interior lights that shine down onto the centre console annoying. i find i connot see the road ahead as good as if they were'nt on can you do anything to turn them off. cheers paul

You get used to them after a while. I don't notice them after 2 years. I preferred my red CatVision lights I retrofitted to my Octavia to be honest.

They are dimmable with the rest of the interior lights but that's about it.

I love them personally and don't find the affect with my forward vision at all.

Me neither.

can you turn them off?

I don't know if you can using the dot matrix or if you need to use the vcds.

I haven't noticed anything in VCDS to turn them off. I'll have a look again this weekend. Otherwise, just put a bit of tape over them or pop open the roof console (it's really easy) and disconnect.

thankyou wokwon i think ill have to.

Don't they dim along with all the other ambient lighting (air vents, dash board backlight, maxidot, climate control etc)? I drive with it all at lowest brightness, so would have noticed if the catvision didn't dim as well as my night vision is woeful.

I dont even know if I've got `em on my car...though I dont drive too much at night time. Are they on all the time the engine is running?

You'll have them. They come on with the lights when driving. Hold your hand just below the interior mirror and you'll notice the illumination then. It's the equivalent to the Mercedes trim lighting, which gives very faint illumination. There's no doubt some fancy explanation for having them, but whatever that may be, I like them! :)

Never found them annoying and certainly they do not affect night driving, I also wear glasses. They are supposed to provide some ambient lighting of the centre console gearshift etc, even though I have the instrument lights on minimum I find them extremely weak and I place my hand under them at odd times to see if they are working. I wish they had kept the red LED's as in the MKI. Never looked inside the unit to see if the White LED's can be changed to the red ones, I would hope they are replaceable items not on a PCB board. Perhaps someone has changed them or had the unit opened and can shed a little light on the LED fitting.

You could use the wifes nail varnish too change the color of the lights, even better get her to paint them for you and if you don't like one color you could change it to another.i might do that myself,oh cant do that i have sold the the black beauty.

I'm with Ray. First car I've had with ambient lighting, and I think it's cool! My wife's Focus Ghia has orangey / red ambient lighting, but I far prefer the effect in my Superb

Red would also be better from a safety perspective as it doesn't affect night vision. A bright white light forces your iris to close so you can't see as well in the dark outside. That's why a lot of tactical torches have a red filter. Military aircrew, tanks, submarines etc. switch to red lights at night in case they have to leave in a hurry. Mind you if you have to leave any of those in a hurry you've probably got bigger problems to worry about:-)

But it isn't a "bright white light" at all, is it? The level of internal lighting is barely raised above that already present from the dials, switchgear and the Columbus, especially if the Navigation is in use.

It is barely perceptible; it brightens and dims with the dashboard illumination. I notice it best if I'm wearing a white shirt - the reflection on my sleeve lets you know the lighting is there. Just seems 'sophisticated' somehow - sad, I know, but hey, that's how it goes. On the (rare) occasions when my teenage daughter has called me 'sad', my response usually is "That's OK, I can do sad"

In my new car a ford Mk2 kuga you can change the color of the interior lights to what you like, thats when i get it still 6 weeks away.

A lot can happen in 6 weeks, Bill. I mean, you could go colour-blind, and then you would be no better off than Argee and me with our 'Minimalist' designer-chic white ones

Quite right, I didn't realise there were lights there until one night I had an SD card in the little cubby and I realised I could read the label. Great idea and not intrusive at all. I can hardly see the light-source while driving because it's so directional.

OH's Mini does this also - she has it set to pink at the minute :giggle: , it often changes when I drive it at night!

As with others, I don't find this a problem at all, in fact quite like it.

Had a look on the weekend, there's no adaptation channel to dim these nor is there an option to turn them off. I suggest you just unplug them.
