Blue smoke and Oil from Exhaust

Featured Replies

Please can you give me your opinion on this...

This morning I noticed blue smoke when starting the Furby and was advised by the Mrs that little specs of oil come out too.

There's no blue smoke when driving along.

I don't have any boost issues or loss of power, however my battery is on its last legs. I'm sure the battery is probably nothing to do with these issues, however any advise or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

has the car been recently serviced?

i suspect valve stem seals, no appreciable oil burning whilst driving, but after sitting for a while oil drips past the valve into the cylinder

Agree! Mine does exactly the same on cold start ups (127k miles). Nothing to worry about.

The car was serviced at the end of Feb by the main dealership. It's done nearly 90k miles, so I'm slightly worried that the car won't last much longer!

The oil usage appears to be okay, infact it doesn't use much at all. It's always been extremely good on oil.

Is it worth taking it to the local indie for a check?

nah, it sounds like valve stem seals. It wont have an influence on how long the car lasts, just fix it, when it gets bad, head off, valves out, new seals - alot cheaper than replacing a car anyday

Out of interest, how much will a job like that cost?

It will be fine!

Probably glow plugs on their way out!

Gonna replace the glow plugs, as I don't think they've ever been replaced in the 8 and a half years of the car being alive!

Where's the best place to get some and which type are the best?

Euro car parts do denso ones thats what i used. Doesnt really matter for glowplugs

You'll need a deep 10mm socket to fit them

Did you have blue smoke prior to changing the glow plugs?

On startup as the engine doesnt have sufficient heat to start up properly!

I had a fault on one glow plug so one cylinder was causing my issue!

when you go to change the glow plugs make sure the engine is hot.

So has your blue smoke issue gone away now?

Excuse my lack of knowledge here, but why does the engine have to be hot to change the plugs?

Cheers

The differential expansion of the plug and the head means that you need less effort to get the intial torque of the plug "broken".

Cheers for advice.

Go on carparts4less website. It's euro car parts sister company but online only so cheaper. Bosch glow plugs £38.80 as apposed to £44 with 25% discount for the cheapest plugs on ecp. Think the Bosch ones on there would be £60+
