Fab Vrs MPG

Featured Replies

I'm determined to get 500 out of this tank whilst driving 'normally' - 70 on m-ways and accelerating like all the other cars - overrun rules!

I reckon going silly with it would return 550+

driving around scotland last week i was quite often seeing it say over 60 mpg after 1100 miles it was saying 55 average that was after a very spirited drive home if you fill the reserve up too 700 miles is possible this was all with a boot full of suit cases and 2 people in it

I started seeing massive improvements in performance and fuel economy about the 5500-6000 mile mark.

Has any one else experienced this?

I'd be interested to know

Is filling the reserve up where you push in the little flap just inside your filler hole (ooh errr) and it makes a whooshing type noise so you carry on squeezing fuel in?

yup thats it well its an expansion tank of sorts

low - 39mpg, high - 56, average - 44

Computer indicated at 48mpg over the last 2500 miles (you can flick the button on the underneath of the computr/wiper stalk to get the '2' reading which is cumulative over the last 2500miles).
I reset the "2" value ever time I fill up. I can then compare the current journey - the "1" reading - with the situation since topping up.

I realise this is a Fabia thread but I just thought you may find this interesting.

I get 50 MPG on my from my Octy quite regularly (every day on my homeward commute) and an average on trip "2" of 36.

So why buy a diesel?

If you drive a modern petrol in 'the right way' you'll get very good MPG out of it too.

50 mpg seems very high, I'm guessing it's not a very high speed journey then, or it's fairly flat.

In Holland I was hitting 60+ in the Furby, mainly due to the lower speeds allowed and the lack of slowing down/accelerating required to get past people, unlike the UK, where my MPG dropped to 43..44 on average.

Must admit within the UK buying a diesel is not really that economical. The price of diesel has soared insanely compared to the continent, where you pay less than 1 Euro per liter of derv, versus about 1.20 for Super Unleaded. Over here it's crazy pricing as the govt decided it was a good way to get more dosh out ;)

Indeed.... I think once you start getting more powerful diesels, such as the Fabia vRS, the gains you get by going to diesel are not really all that impressive any more compared to petrol.

My average in the Fabia was just below 40 MPG. My average in the Golf? Just below 40... funny that really, especially as I dont exactly fanny it either.

I struggled to get 50 MPG in the Fabia to be honest.

What with the rising price of diesel v's petrol (diesel costs nearly as much as Optimax now), I dont think I will ever buy a diesel car again. I simply think that petrols are more fun, only slightly less economical in reality, and a lot more drivable - for example, I find it very easy to drive around in high gears at low speeds in the Golf, much more so than the Fabia because you dont get a load of turbo lag. Yet when I want to have fun, I've got another 2,000 rpm to play with over the Fabia... and mine isnt even a high revving car.

The only thing I miss is the excellent 5th gear performance in the Fabia, that made it such a devastating motorway car.... but in reality, you can go just as fast in the Golf by engaging 3rd or 4th instead.

I must admit that the 50 MPG journey is at about 50-60 MPH with a very slight downhill gradient

My previous car only managed 21/22mpg so 50mpg is a real and welcome difference. In fact the Fabia is so economical that it's cheaper in fuel terms (though not otherwise) to drive than my motorbike which does about 45mpg... And I have to dig deep into my pockets to take out the 32mpg MX-5 which has less performance than the Fabia...
